Shuswap Search and Rescue

Shuswap Search and Rescue If you require immediate SAR assistance please call 911.

SVSAR has served the citizens and visitors of the Shuswap region since the late 1970's, but has been registered as a non-profit society since 1990. Our volunteers consist of approximately 40 individuals, from varying backgrounds including, but not limited to, Farming, Forestry, and Information Technology. One thing in common with all of our volunteers is a love and respect of the outdoors, and a d

esire to give back to the community. SVSAR is one of 79 Volunteer Search Organizations sanctioned by the provincial government to carry out ground and inland water Search & Rescue (SAR) operations. SVSAR is composed of volunteers who possess good local terrain knowledge and are trained and certified for deployment in a variety of tasks under various conditions and in difficult terrain, including technical mountain environment.

This weekend, our Swiftwater Rescue Technicians have the opportunity to attend Raftex. A swiftwater training event alongside members from other Search and Rescue teams.

By working and training together in a fun and dynamic environment, we strengthen not only our individual skills but also the partnerships that are so important when multiple agencies and teams come together during real-world incidents.

We would like to give special thanks to Revelstoke Search and Rescue for hosting the event, Williamson Lake Campground for the wonderful accommodations for the event, Selkirk Saunas for providing a place for the teams to warm up (Warm and cozy), and every volunteer that made this event happen.

“In many parts of British Columbia, especially in remote and northern regions, ⚠️ HELP COULD BE HOURS AWAY ⚠️,” says Dale Parker, BCSARA President. “Distance, terrain, weather, access routes, and limited connectivity can all affect how quickly search and rescue groups are able to reach someone in need.”

While Southern and coastal regions often see incidents involving hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, paddlers, and climbers, northern and interior regions frequently involve hunters, ATV and UTV users, resource road travellers, remote anglers, foragers, and backcountry campers. → Regardless of activity or location, preparedness remains critical.←

As the long weekend approaches, many will be heading outdoors to enjoy some adventures! ☀️

Hot daytime temperatures and rapidly changing mountain weather can catch people off guard fast. Even if conditions seem perfect at the trailhead, weather in the backcountry can shift quickly with sudden rain ,strong winds, thunderstorms, and temperature drops at elevation.

‼️Make sure you carry extra water, pack layers and rain gear, and plan your route. ‼️

Preparation turns a good adventure into a safe one. Stay alert, stay hydrated, and make smart decisions outdoors.

Enjoy your long weekend!

Another great Saturday spent training ! We focused on building and sharpening essential search skills through hands-on scenarios and field exercises.

Members practiced grid searches, e-bike searches, side-by-side operations, quad training, navigation, communication, and more. We had a full day focused on sharpening skills and working as a team.

Training days like these are what keep us prepared for when real calls come in. Big thanks to everyone who volunteered their Saturday to learn, practice, and support the team.

It might be feeling more like summer these days, but it is still wintery in our mountains and hills! SVSAR has had multiple calls in the last few weeks help get people unstuck on the Forest Service Roads. There is still snow at higher elevations, and even lower than you might expect, in shady areas and on switchbacks.

Remember to be prepared by leaving a trip plan and packing things like chains, shovels, a winch, tow rope, a satellite communication device, and extra food and water. Having enough layers of clothing to get you through an unexpected chilly night is essential too. Adventures are way more fun without hypothermia!
