On any given night in Canada, more than six thousand young people are homeless. Some are no older than thirteen. They're couch surfing, or bouncing in and out of shelters. Young women are swept up by pimps who prowl the streets looking for the vulnerable. Teenagers sleep rough on the street, hungry and at risk. Young adults struggle to find a job and an affordable place to live.
In the course of a year, as many as 40 thousand of Canada's children are without a home.

Nova Scotians encouraged to get vaccinated for measles as case numbers in Canada rise
PROVINCE HAS NO CASES YET, BUT OFFICIALS DON'T EXPECT THAT TO LAST

03/10/2025

Measles cases are on the rise across the world, including Canada. Before travelling, make sure you and your family are fully vaccinated.

Anyone born in or after 1970 is eligible for two doses of measles vaccine. Typically, these are given as part of your routine childhood vaccines. You can still get them for free if you didn’t get them as a child.

Adults born before 1970 usually don’t need a measles vaccine because of past immunity. However, you can get a single dose for free if you travel to a place where there are many cases of measles.

Facts about measles:

- Measles is a viral infection that spreads easily and quickly among people who have no protection. It can lead to severe complications.
- It can be prevented by a vaccine (free for eligible Nova Scotians).
- The vaccine also prevents against mumps and rubella.
- Unvaccinated young children and pregnant people are at highest risk of severe complications.
- Protection against measles, mumps and rubella is especially important for people planning to travel.

What should you do?

- Check your immunization records by downloading the YourHealthNS app or visiting https://vaxrecordns.nshealth.ca/.
- Check to see if you’re eligible for the measles vaccine: www.nshealth.ca/measles
- Contact your local Public Health Office - www.nshealth.ca/public-health
- Find a mobile vaccine clinic in your area – www.nshealth.ca/PHMU
- Contact your primary healthcare provider.
- Contact your local pharmacy. Please call head to make sure the vaccine is available at that location before you visit.

APPEAL DENIED FOR CALGARY MOTHER WHO ASSAULTED TODDLER ,LEFT SEVERE BURNS UNTREATED.......
WARNING DISTURBING CONTENT.

Found guilty of aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life.
Mar 05, 2025
A Calgary mother convicted of assaulting her two-year-old daughter, causing broken bones and leaving the child with untreated burns has had her appeal dismissed.

The mother, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, was found guilty of aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life. She was appealing the assault convictions.

The Alberta Court of Appeal heard the girl was taken to a clinic for an unrelated issue in July 2017, when a doctor noticed severe untreated burns on her hands. She was referred to a plastic surgeon, but the mother didn't take her.
The child wasn't seen by another doctor until she was admitted to hospital a month later with a broken femur that required surgery and a fractured pelvis bone.

The defence argued the child burned herself two months prior by running her hands under steaming hot water. The mother claimed the girl was born with a brain injury and couldn't feel pain.
The woman also said the child broke her leg and pelvis after accidentally falling down the stairs.

At trial, Justice David Labrenz accepted expert evidence suggesting the hand injuries were consistent with untreated deep immersion burns and that the broken bone would have required force that doesn't line up with falling down stairs.

He ruled the mother was lying deliberately and made an effort to cover up the injuries, including the creation of a false narrative that her daughter couldn't feel pain. Hospital staff confirmed the child cried when she moved or was transferred from a stretcher.

The defence appeal was based on the judge's inference that the woman was concealing her guilt. Her lawyer argued the judge didn't consider factors like injuries being caused by another person.

Appeal Court judges ruled there was enough evidence to find the woman guilty.

"We are satisfied (the judge's) inference that the injuries were intentionally inflicted by the appellant discloses no reviewable error," the court wrote in a decision released Wednesday.

"The appeal is dismissed.".......CBC.

MAN WHO LURED CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 9 FOR S*X SENTENCED TO 4 YEARS.........
March 06, 2025
A man who pleaded guilty to possession of child po*******hy, child luring and making s*xually explicit material available to a person under 16 was sentenced to just over four years on Thursday, but with time served will spend another year and a half behind bars.

Aaron Kowalchuk was arrested in June 2023 by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit.

Police say he was using TikTok and other platforms to lure children for s*x, his victims as young as nine years old.
Kowalchuk’s lawyer had asked for a stay of proceedings or reduced sentence under Section 12 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms for cruel and unusual treatment.

He argues his rights were breached based on things like the amount of time he was given out of his cell, being called names, being urine-bombed by another inmate and not being provided orientation material when he first arrived at the Edmonton Remand Centre (ERC).

Kowalchuk also claims he suffered from a lack of sleep due to the mattress and noise from other inmates.

Kowalchuk also testified the food served at the ERC aggravated his ulcerative colitis and said it took about a year to get medicine for his condition.

Justice Lynn Michele Angotti called Kowalchuk’s crimes “vile.”

She sentenced Kowalchuk to four years and three months with a three month Duncan credit for the treatment he received at the ERC, but she ruled there was not enough of a violation to stay the proceedings.

With credit for 938 days served and the Duncan credit, Kowalchuk will spend another 592 days in custody..........CTV.

Package containing $300,000 worth of contraband seized from N.S. prison......
March 06, 2025
There has been another seizure of contraband worth hundreds of thousands of dollars at a federal penitentiary in the Maritimes.

In a release Thursday, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says staff found a package containing cellphones and accessories, steroids capsules, and THC/hashish at the Springhill Institution on Feb. 19.

The CSC puts the haul’s worth at an estimated institutional value of $300,000.
CTV News forwarded several follow-up questions to the CSC, including whether the package was dropped by a drone and why it took so long to report publicly, but has yet to hear back.

The Nova Scotia RCMP did say it received a report of a person believed to be operating a drone near the medium security institution close to 9 p.m. on Feb. 19, but one of their patrols didn’t find anyone.

It was the third such report investigated by the RCMP in recent weeks. On Jan. 25 and Feb. 5, Mounties responded to similar reports of a suspicious person possibly operating a drone near the Institution.

The CSC has yet to say what, if anything, came of those reports from their perspective.

In an email to CTV News, Cumberland County District RCMP says it’s looking for help from the public.

“The Cumberland Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit is actively investigating reports of suspicious persons and vehicles, in the area of Springhill Institution, in an effort to respond to illegal drone activity,” Sgt. Brian Cameron, operations non-commissioned officer of Cumberland County District RCMP, said.

“We encourage anyone with information to contact their local RCMP detachment, local police or the Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous.”

The Cumberland Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit includes members of the RCMP and the Amherst Police Department.

Finding high-value packages around federal institutions containing drugs and other contraband isn’t new to the Maritimes.

On Dec. 9 staff at the Atlantic Institution found a package containing $405,500 worth of crystal m**hamphetamine, shatter, M**A (ecstasy), and ma*****na.

In May 2024, $475,000 worth of crystal m**h was discovered at the Springhill Institution in Nova Scotia. Part of that amount was dropped by a suspected drone.

SUDBURY ,ONTARIO , POLICE BUST M**H LAB WHILE INVESTIGATING ASSAULT......
March 06, 2025
Officers investigating an assault discovered a m**h lab at home in the Chelmsford area of Greater Sudbury this week, police say.

Patrol officers started investigating Sunday after receiving a complaint about an assault, Greater Sudbury Police Service said in a news release Thursday morning.

Armed with information about a possible drug lab on the residential property, officers arrested a 56-year-old man when they “observed what they believed to be an active m**hamphetamine lab.”
The home was secured and the fire department’s HAZMAT team was brought in to protect public safety.

Once detectives received a search warrant on Wednesday, they found 210 grams of crystal m**h worth about $20,000, a large sum of cash believed to be more than $100,000, two long guns, ammunition and a conducted energy weapon.
The suspect is charged with drug trafficking, producing m**h, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a prohibited weapon and two counts of unauthorized possession of fi****ms.

He appeared in bail court Monday.

“Anyone with information related to individuals selling, trafficking or manufacturing illicit drugs in our community is encouraged to contact police 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers 705-222-8477,” police said.
