Thank You For Visiting, Probus Saint John!

We were honoured to welcome members of Probus Saint John to Shining Horizons for a tour of our facility and an opportunity to share more about our work in the community.

It was a pleasure to introduce our programs, discuss the development of the Care Farm, and highlight how we support individuals and families through therapeutic riding, new mental health and wellness initiatives, equine-assisted therapy, life skills development, and community engagement.

For those unfamiliar with Probus, it is an organization that brings together retired and semi-retired individuals who share interests in lifelong learning, friendship, community involvement, and social connection. Through meetings, guest speakers, and educational visits, Probus members remain active, informed, and engaged in their communities.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with community leaders and residents who care deeply about building a stronger, healthier future for everyone.

We’re excited to welcome participants to this summer’s Pony Pals program!

Schedule:
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays
1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Dates:
June 29 – August 16

Ages:
7–10 years

Program Details:
• $25 per child, per visit
• Weight restriction of 150 lbs applies
• Registration required

Pony Pals is a fun and supportive opportunity for children to build confidence, connection, and hands-on experience with ponies at Shining Horizons.

From lumber to learning spaces.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help lay the foundation for something truly special. We're grateful for the energy, teamwork, and commitment to building something meaningful together.

We’re expanding our growing space beyond the greenhouses with the construction of in/outdoor garden boxes. These will give participants even more opportunities to plant, grow, and care for crops in a hands-on, supportive environment.

These garden boxes are coming together and will soon be filled with soil, plants, and hands-on experiences for participants in our Care Farm program.

This program is not about growing crops but rather about personal growth and skills development. Each box represents another space for learning, confidence-building, and meaningful connection.

Special thanks to one of our AMAZING volunteers Ash who raised over $375 by selling handmade cards in our family room. Today she surprised everyone by donating the money she earned back to Shining Horizons.

We are deeply grateful to the The Greater Saint John Community Foundation for their generous grant that helped bring phase 1 of our Care Farm project to life!

This milestone represents far more than funding, it is the result of over two years of dedicated work, building bridges, collaboration, and community belief in a shared vision.

Over these past two years, we have been planting the seeds of the Care Farm concept: developing a therapeutic farm-based program that integrates nature, animals, and structured farm activities with professional mental health support.

The Care Farm is designed to support youth and adults with complex needs, as well as youth within the school system facing mental health challenges, through therapy, skill-building, and meaningful connection to land, animals, and community.

At its core, the Care Farm is about helping close the gap in mental health support within our community, offering an accessible, innovative, and relational approach to care that complements existing services and strengthens the overall circle of support.

From the beginning, this journey has been built on relationships, setting clear goals, defining pathways, and bringing together a circle of care that includes community partners, healthcare providers, therapists, educators and our government who share a commitment to innovative, accessible mental health support.

This GSJCF grant has helped us take a significant step forward in turning vision into reality, strengthening the foundation for a program rooted in dignity, healing, and long-term impact.

We are sincerely thankful to all our funding partners, collaborators, and everyone who continues to believe in this work. Together, we are building something that will serve the community for years to come.

Another big step forward at the SH Care Farm!

A huge thank you to Brookville Lime for your incredibly generous donation of five truckloads of gravel for the inside of our two greenhouses. Your support is making a real difference in helping us build a strong foundation for our growing spaces, and we truly appreciate your contribution to Shining Horizons.

This gravel will be compressed into a foundation that helps keep the greenhouses clean from grass and weeds and helps with water drainage.

While it may seem like a simple step, this foundation will support so much more. It’s where individuals will plant, grow, and harvest as part of the Care Farm program building confidence, developing skills, and finding a sense of purpose along the way.

Each step brings us closer to opening a space where meaningful experiences and personal growth can thrive.

We are so excited to begin building our brand-new Care Farm at Shining Horizons, but we can’t do it without our amazing community!

Our Care Farm program is designed to empower individuals with complex needs through hands-on, meaningful activities like gardening, barn work and animal care. Participants will build confidence, independence, and real-life skills in a supportive, therapeutic environment.

We’re kicking off Phase 1, and we’re looking for volunteers to help us bring this vision to life!

We are looking for volunteers to help with:
• Preparing the farming area
• General setup and outdoor tasks
• Building greenhouses

We start building next week. Stay tuned for updates.
