Diverting them from not just the shelter, but from experiencing homelessness. Thatโ€™s why RAFT has focused on keeping youth out of shelters through its Shelter Diversion Program.

We are thrilled about the exciting uniting of United Ways. At RAFT, we understand the power of attachment. Connecting people to each other is the surest way to prevent aloneness, strengthen belonging and end youth homelessness. We thank the United Way Golden Horseshoe for supporting RAFT programs that protect and forge the connections youth have to their families, communities, school โ€“ and to themselves. Joining together means opening more doors and creating stable futures.

RAFTโ€™s Executive Director, Michael Lethby, was invited to present to the House of Commons HUMA Committee as part of its study on homelessness in Canada. We shared RAFTโ€™s proven prevention model โ€” including Youth Reconnect, Shelter Diversion, and Family & Natural Supports โ€” which has helped reduce youth shelter use by 80% since 2008.

As Chair Robert Morrissey noted, our perspective offered โ€œa much differentโ€ and needed lens.

Prevention works. Weโ€™re proud to share a community based model that keeps young people connected to family, friends, and community.
