RAFT’s Executive Director, Michael Lethby, was invited to present to the House of Commons HUMA Committee as part of its study on homelessness in Canada. We shared RAFT’s proven prevention model — including Youth Reconnect, Shelter Diversion, and Family & Natural Supports — which has helped reduce youth shelter use by 80% since 2008.

As Chair Robert Morrissey noted, our perspective offered “a much different” and needed lens.

Prevention works. We’re proud to share a community based model that keeps young people connected to family, friends, and community.

Why are current approaches not fixing things? Why are we ignoring the data? Why are so many people content to accept the status quo? At RAFT, we have always believed that homelessness can indeed be solved. So, we looked at the evidence from all sides, challenged our assumptions and the pieces started to fall into place. We discovered that the real cause of homelessness is not lack of housing; it is broken human attachments. The solution is not shelters; it is repairing and reinforcing relationships with families, friends, schools, and communities.

RAFT’s Youth Reconnect program works alongside schools and teachers to identify youth with the goal of keeping them in their own community, finding them housing, and keeping them in school.

This is just one way we effectively stop the cycle of chronic homelessness before it even begins.
