In November 2004, a group of LGBTQ+ members and allies came together to build a community organization to help unite Niagara’s sexual and gender-diverse community. It has evolved over time, and those founding members have moved on to leave their legacy with the organization reflected in the Founder’s Community Fund. https://outniagara.org/outcommunity/the-founders-community-fund/

A resurgence of

energy came to OUTniagara in 2018, as new Board volunteers ushered in a community-based series of activities including Humans of OUTniagara series showcasing our community’s stories, the OUTbox newsletter, and a partnership with local print publication at the time, The Sound. This new energy and vision for the organization was further cemented with the successful application to Women and Gender Equality in 2020 for the project Informed, Inclusive, Indivisible: Collectively Advancing 2S&LGBTQQIA+ Equality in Niagara+, a community-based research project which outlined key issues and needs in our community, outlined in the OUT IN Niagara Community Strengths and Needs Assessment.

Dear OUTNiagara members current and past,

Pride flag raisings matter. They create visibility, affirmation, and a public message that 2S&LGBTQQIA+ people across Niagara deserve safety, dignity, inclusion, and full participation in community life.

In light of recent uncertainty around Pride flag raising ceremonies in several Niagara municipalities, OUTNiagara is offering no-charge support to municipalities that want to move forward in a respectful, inclusive, and community-centred way.
Our message is simple:

The Pride flag matters.
The follow-through matters too.

We are encouraging municipalities to share what they have done over the past year to advance 2S&LGBTQQIA+ inclusion. This is not about proving perfection. It is about demonstrating care, accountability, and continued movement.
