Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy - KCC

KCC is a land trust preserving headlands, beaches, and wetlands of the Kingsburg, Nova Scotia region. It is currently served by an eight member board.

The KCC is an entirely volunteer organization and, as such, depends on the commitment of time and reflection by its members and on the donations of its members and supporting organizations for its funding.

About Alex

I am a graduate student with the Marine Affairs Program at Dalhousie University, and will be working with Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy this summer as a Stewardship Assistant. Having grown up in rural Nova Scotia, I consider myself lucky enough to hail from one of the most beautiful places in the world. I have a BSc in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University; during the course of this degree, I was able to be exposed to a wide range of subject areas and knowledge types, gaining an appreciation for the multifaceted nature of many modern management issues. Outside of an academic context, I enjoy being in the great outdoors or sheltering inside with my knitting and a good book. I am very excited to work with KCC and get to know the Kingsburg Peninsula this summer!

About KCC site monitoring

Over the next few months, we are going to conduct monitoring at over 100 KCC stewarded sites on the Kingsburg peninsula, in Riverport and in Feltzen South. During monitoring we will be collecting information about ecosystems, the condition of the property and environment, sensitive areas, accessibility, and evidence of animal and/ or human use. At the end of the monitoring period we will analyze all the data, update our site maps, and develop a plan for future stewardship, monitoring, and public access.

29.3% of Nova Scotians were living in food-insecure households in 2024, which is one of the highest food insecurity rates in the country (Feed Nova Scotia).

Again, this year the Kingsburg Community Association (KCA) and KCC (Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy) are working together to raise money for The Lunenburg Food Bank Society throughout the month of April. At the end of 2025 they were feeding 50 – 60 clients every two weeks with food expenditures running $8,000/month.

We are fortunate to live in and enjoy Kingsburg. As we have generously done in our previous Food Bank Drives, let’s share our good fortune in a way that will have an immediate benefit.

Join us in welcoming Annabel Westell as the new Executive Director of the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy!

Hello!

My name is Annabel Westell and I am very excited to be taking on the role of Executive Director of the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy. I have been a frequent visitor to and occasional resident of Kingsburg for 20 years.

My background is in marine biology, with degrees from Dalhousie University and the University of St Andrews (Scotland). I have worked for small non-profits, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the US.

I recently moved back to Lunenburg and am looking forward to contributing to local conservation, environmental science, and my community. My priorities for the KCC include outreach and engagement, stewardship, and promoting sustainable access to this beautiful region.

I deeply value Kingsburg for its wonderful landscapes, ecology, and community. Hiking around Gaff Point, picking blackberries, swimming at Hirtle’s Beach, sighting beavers in the pond or a minke whale in the bay, are all cherished memories.

Mary Oliver wrote “sometimes I need only to stand wherever I am to be blessed.” I think those who have had the fortune to visit or live in Kingsburg understand this feeling, and the wish to protect it as well as share it. As I enter this new role, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the stewardship of such a special place.

KCC Board Opportunity – Treasurer

The Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy (KCC) is seeking a Treasurer to join our volunteer Board of Directors.

This role supports KCC’s mission to protect and preserve the Kingsburg Peninsula by overseeing financial reporting and working closely with the ED and accountant.

Experience in finance or nonprofit management is an asset, but a passion for conservation and community is just as important.

As many of you have most likely heard, the Province of Nova Scotia has announced restrictions on travel and activities in wooded areas as of 4:00pm Tuesday, August 5th. These restrictions follow a province-wide ban on open fires on July 30th and have been implemented due to current hot and dry conditions, which have greatly increased the risk of wildfires.

At this time:
hiking, camping, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted;
trail systems through woods are off limits; and
camping is allowed only in campgrounds.
The restrictions are in place on Crown and private lands, including Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy conservation lands and associated trail systems.

Those in violation of the ban will be fined $25,000. Beaches and shoreline continue to be available to access for low impact activities as long as you can access them without travelling through wooded areas.

Prominent among the KCC trail closures is Gaff Point, located at the southern end of Hirtles beach in Kingsburg. The KCC stewards Gaff Point in collaboration with the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

Additionally, there will be no stewardship or monitoring activities occurring on KCC lands at this time. These restrictions will be in place until October 15th, 2025, or until conditions improve.

We are hiring: Stewardship Field Assistant

The Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy is a non-profit land trust committed to preserving headlands, forests, beaches and wetlands. We’re focused on the Kingsburg Peninsula and its neighboring communities, though our influence and support extend well beyond. The KCC actively seeks to protect the open, coastal nature of the Kingsburg Peninsula in a manner that recognizes the need for community growth and development, while also recognizing how quickly the coastal environment can be lost and once lost, is not easily restored. The KCC, a long-established land trust and conservation non-profit, is recruiting a part-time, temporary Stewardship Field Assistant.

Currently stewarding approximately 436 acres of fragile coastal lands, marsh ecosystems, and forested areas, the KCC is looking for the right person to assist with stewardship and monitoring of these lands. The KCC is looking to hire a dedicated and flexible individual who thrives in a dynamic environment and has a passion for land conservation and hands-on environmental work. The Stewardship Field Assistant will be reporting to Morganne Robben, Executive Director of the KCC. This is a primarily field-based position involving outdoor work on a variety of coastal and inland properties. Some office-based tasks and data entry will be required.

Position Title: Stewardship Field Assistant
Term: July 2nd, 2025 – August 29th, 2025 (9 weeks)
Salary: $18 - $20 per hour, commensurate with experience
Status: Contract, Part-time (21 hours per week)
Location: Kingsburg Peninsula, Nova Scotia

Responsibilities:

- Conduct field assessments of KCC properties, including monitoring activities such as vegetation and wildlife surveys
- Recording and maintaining accurate field data reports
- Assist in the implementation of stewardship and monitoring plans of all KCC owned properties
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines during fieldwork
- Create updated property maps using GIS
- Support community engagement events and outreach activities as needed

Candidate Profile:

- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a post-secondary program in biology, environmental science, geography, or another related field of study
- Experience using a variety of computer applications such as Microsoft Office and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Must be able to undertake strenuous activities, work long hours in the field, and navigate difficult terrain
- Proven ability to problem solve and to take initiative to complete tasks
- Must be adaptable within a changing work environment
- Capable of learning new skills; particularly in data analysis and field methods
- Ability to troubleshoot unexpected problems and develop innovative solutions
- Must have strong organizational and time management skills
- Must be highly motivated, independent, and hard-working
- Knowledge of terrestrial/marine environment, vegetation, and wildlife characteristics of Nova Scotia’s coastal habitats is considered an asset
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required
