Forêt Acadienne School of Bushcraft

Forêt Acadienne School of Bushcraft Forêt Acadienne is rooted in the spirit of the Acadian Forest—a meeting place of two forests.

Just as this forest bridges two worlds, our school brings together the knowledge of traditional survival skills with modern approaches to wilderness living.

The Forest Always Has Something to Teach

I've come to realize that no walk in the woods is ever just a walk.

Every time I step into the forest, there's something new to notice. A tree that's thriving where others aren't. Fresh animal tracks crossing the trail. Moss growing where conditions are just right. Small details that are easy to miss when you're in a hurry.

The forest teaches us to slow down and pay attention.

It teaches observation, because the smallest details often tell the biggest stories.

It teaches patience, because nature works on its own timeline, not ours.

And it teaches humility, because no matter how much we think we know, there's always something new to discover.

That's one of the reasons I keep coming back. The forest is one of the best teachers I've ever had.

What's something the forest has taught you?

🍄 From the forest to the table!

Sunday’s Intro to Backcountry Awareness course was quite the adventure. We explored the forest, identified and collected several species of mushrooms—including saffron milk caps, chanterelles, and yellow-foot chanterelles—then brought our haul back to sort, prepare, and eventually taste together.

There’s something special about learning to see the forest differently. 🌲

A big thank you to Jessika for sharing her mycology knowledge with the group!

🦍 One Item, Many Uses: Gorilla Tape

You don't need to carry a full roll.

I wrap a few feet of Gorilla Tape around a lighter, water bottle, or trekking pole, and it's always there when I need it.

Some of the ways I've used it include:

🎒 Repairing a torn backpack

⛺ Patching a tarp or tent in the field

🥾 Reinforcing worn boots or shoes

🪵 Securing loose gear to a pack

🔧 Temporary equipment repairs

🩹 Helping secure a bandage in an emergency

💧 Sealing small leaks in containers

It takes up almost no space, weighs very little, and can keep a small problem from ending a trip.

Sometimes the most valuable gear isn't the biggest—it's the gear you hope you never have to use.

What's the most creative way you've used duct tape or Gorilla Tape outdoors?

Yesterday’s Intro to Backcountry Awareness course definitely had a successful harvest! 🍄🌲

This was quite the haul of mushrooms collected throughout the day—and the best part? It was all shared with the group, giving everyone a chance to get a closer look, learn about what we found, and even taste some of the edible species at the end of the day.

There’s something special about learning in the forest: seeing it, touching it, identifying it, and sometimes even tasting it. 🌿🍄

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day such a great experience! And a very special thanks to Jessika Gauvin for helping us out!

Behind the Scenes 🎥

Not every shot goes according to plan...

Sometimes the camera ends up on the forest floor before the clip even begins. 😅

Fortunately, the camera survived, and we got the shot on the next attempt.

Creating bushcraft content isn't always as smooth as it looks!

A marlin spike is a simple way to secure a ridgeline while making it easy to release when it's time to pack up.

Small techniques like this can make setting up camp quicker and more efficient.

Have you ever used a marlin spike before?

🔥 Sunday Reflection

A small skill learned in the woods can create a big change in confidence.

Making your first fire.
Building your first shelter.
Finding your way with a map and compass.

These moments remind us that confidence comes from experience, practice, and spending time outdoors.

What outdoor skill are you most proud of learning? 🌲
