THE CONTEST

There are an estimated 2,000 feral domestic rabbits living outside in Richmond, from yards to parks to medians to hedgerows.

They don’t belong out there.

We’re holding a photo contest on Abandoned Rabbits to encourage community members to use the tool, help us track populations, and advocate for a humane solution.

HOW TO ENTER:

1. Identify domestic abandoned or feral rabbits in public areas (parks, streets, etc). Snap a pic! - NOTE: Do not take pictures on private properties other than your own without express permission from the owners or tenants.

2. Report the sighting to Abandonedrabbits.com with as much information as possible. - Our volunteers monitor these sightings daily, and dispatch trapping support for those who need it most when we have the resources available.

3. Mention “photo contest” in the notes to enter the contest. - The winner will be chosen by a committee, and receive a Meet n’ Treat party with real bunnies as their prize.

4. Get a special mention! - We’ll also recognize standout photos for the Most Rabbits in One Frame, Cutest Rabbit, and Best Comedy Shot on our social media.

We’re bad at thank you’s.

When you work in animal welfare… just trying to survive the latest catastrophe, it can be easy to put up the blinders, focus on the current crisis, and keep it chugging.

For every “thanks!” we manage to shout out along the way, there are a dozen animal heroes who go largely unrecognized - volunteering their time to make sure every bunny is fed, dreaming up fresh fundraising ideas, tracking vaccines and ensuring everyone is protected…

Rabbitats is made up of so many incredible advocates, all making the extra effort for the bunnies. We really need to do a better job of sharing our thanks.

Today, we’d like to recognize one of our fosters who’s doing her best to change our oldies’ lives.

Emily chose to foster because of her experience volunteering at the shelter. Going home after her shifts was hard, knowing these bunnies had nowhere else to go. So she wanted to share her home with some of them.

She felt the deepest connection with the oldies and special needs buns, and they were often the most grateful for her love, more likely to be overlooked due to age, personality, or disability.

She took home 8-year-old Aries and Gemini, a pair of sanctuary “lifers”.. and changed their lives.

Gemini has since passed, but did so in the dignity of a loving home. Aries is now joined by his new girlfriend, Hayley, and couldn’t be more different from the timid bunny he was at the shelter.

Aries is the king of the house, filled with purrs and confidence whether he’s lounging on the floor or snuggling on the bed.

Emily has also since brought home home 10-year-old Maru (a recent widower), and Raggamuffin (a blind rabbit who deserved more than our sanctuary could offer).

“There’s nothing more rewarding than being the first human to earn a bunny’s love and trust, or knowing you’re giving a bunny who’s been someone else’s faithful companion a new lease on life,” Emily says. “There are so many more bunnies at Rabbitats who would flourish in a home if they were only given the chance.”

We’re thankful for Emily, as well as all of our fosters, supporters, volunteers, staff, and beyond - you make our little bunny world go-round 🌎🐰💛

We REALLY want you... TOMORROW ‼

We are very short of volunteers at our Richmond, BC, sanctuary with people sick and away tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 9th), can anybody come and help out from 9:30 to 12:30 or any times in between? The rabbits don't vote and Rabbitats doesn't get political, but we want to take the pending civic and provincial elections as an opportunity to thank three politicians who have been there for us. Henry Yao is running in Richmond Centre, and for his last stint as an MLA, he was the most helpful, honest politician ever. He didn't pull any punches, he told us when we were wrong and supported us when we were right. He is a true mediator in a climate of extremes. Michael Wolfe, running again for Richmond City Council, has been our most prominent supporter and our voice on council for years. And Pete Fry, a Vancouver City Councillor, running to become next mayor, has been extremely attentive to the rabbit issues in Vancouver. Whatever the outcome, we want to thank them for their support! (This post is not meant to be a debate, just some kudos).

Promise some yoga happened during our Moon Rabbit festivities... but the bunnies didn't make it easy!

Thanks to every-bun that celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival with us, with a special thanks to all of our amazing volunteers, Lansdowne Centre Richmond for hosting, and, of course, the bunnies. 🐰♥🐰

8 bunnies are off to explore their new home at Rixen Creek Farm Sanctuary!!

It took some serious brain power to figure out the best group for the space, but ultimately landed on these gentle, middle-aged darlings. Every-bun is sturdy (a little bit chonky) and ready to grow their winter coats.

This crew had been with us for about 5 years, living quiet lives in one of our Richmond colonies. When suddenly - an adventure of a lifetime! 1000 square ft of enclosed, natural sanctuary to explore.

Thanks so much to Rixen Creek for giving them such an enriching space, Candy and Karma for doing the long transport (and everyone who stepped up to offer support - wow!), Alison for coordinating, and Deanna for final health checks.

It was a nailbiter trying to cover all the bills this past month, but we pulled it off thanks to supporters like the Rice family. 💕 Madison and Emma along with mom Lisa had volunteered at our South Surrey sanctuary almost since its inception and, now models, continue to support us by organizing an annual photography meet up with the funds going to support the bunnies.

BUNNY TRANSPORT NEEDED! Rixen Creek has kindly offered a permanent home for 10 of our sanctuary bunnies. The space is truly awesome - SO much room for the bunnies to enjoy. But we need your help to get them there!

Where? Richmond, BC -> Princeton, BC
When? This week! Wednesday or Thursday preferred.

The drive is approximately 3.5 hours. You'll need space for 10 rabbits (4-5 carriers). Carriers will be loaded with timothy and fresh, well-watered veggies for the trip.

Can cover gas if needed. 🤍 Please reach out to [email protected] if you can help.
