Happy World Bee Day, everyone! Bees were declared to be the most important living thing on Earth a few years ago, but bees of all kinds are struggling. There are many factors at play, but loss of habitat and food sources are among the top contenders. Click through to find out how you can help bees of all kinds thrive.
Beekeepers also need to do their due diligence: simply having hives isn't enough.
🐝Stay on top of current research and best practices
🐝Dispose of your pesticides (mite treatments in particular) in an environmentally friendly way and always follow manufacturer directions
🐝Ensure your bees are mite and disease free as much as possible
🐝 Keep your bees from swarming
🐝Consider planting wildflowers and riparian areas to help boost wild bee populations and decrease competition

Remember, we don't necessarily need more beekeepers: we need more GOOD beekeepers to fight the good fight.

The board of the Upper Ottawa Valley Beekeeper’s Association is pleased to present our first ever Young Beekeeper’s Scholarship! This scholarship will be available to one new beekeeper under 30 years old living in our area (Renfrew County). The winner will receive:
1. A spot in one of Restoration Honeybee Company’s summer beginner beekeeping workshops
2. Equipment for 1 beehive, sponsored by the UOVBA, purchased from A Simpler Time Family Farm
3. A nucleus colony (pending completion of the beekeeping course)
Applicants will provide a 1-2 minute video describing their interest in becoming a beekeeper. This video must not be AI generated, and should at minimum explain why they want to keep bees and how this scholarship would benefit them. Voting will occur on two platforms: likes on social media (worth 50% of overall consideration) and votes from UOVBA members (comprising the other 50% of weight). Applicants must join the Upper Ottawa Valley Beekeeper’s Association and pay the $10-15 annual membership fee before applying. Completed videos can be submitted to the Upper Ottawa Valley Beekeeper’s Association via email, or via Facebook or Instagram. The applicant agrees to have their image and video content shared publicly online. Applicants under 18 must have signed approval from a parent or guardian. Scholarship benefits may be withheld if the applicant does not show sufficient commitment to beekeeping best practices. The scholarship has no monetary value and cannot be exchanged for cash or otherwise sold or given away.
Application videos can be sent to this account! Application deadline is May 15th, 2026. Voting will occur between May 15th-31st.

Please share widely and help us help a new beekeeper get started on their journey 💛🐝🍯

Tonight marked our final Hive Minds webinar viewing before the beekeeping season ramps up. In Bee Breeding in the Age of Genomics, Garett Slater of Texas A&M explains how we could be using DNA testing to help us selectively breed better bees based on different genetic markers and proposes a new queen ranking system that could become affordable and accessible to the average beekeeper.
Special thank you to our newest member Eleanor for coming out tonight and bringing the cheese and crackers 😁
