As Nurse Practitioners take on expanded, high-complexity roles in specialty care, formal training is vital.

​The Saskatchewan Association of Nurse Practitioners (SANP) has released a new Position Statement advocating for structured, competency-based NP Residency and Fellowship Programs across Saskatchewan.

​Why does this matter?
▪️Brief onboarding isn't enough: Specialty environments require targeted, rigorous clinical preparation beyond generalist education.
▪️ Standardized & Portable: Competency-based frameworks ensure NPs can bring high-standard specialty care anywhere in the province without losing momentum.
▪️ Protecting Patients: Strategic post-graduate education builds clinical confidence, supports workforce retention, and keeps patient safety front and center.

​SANP is calling on provincial partners to form a working group and build standardized specialty pathways for Saskatchewan NPs. Investing in structured NP specialty education is an investment in patient safety, healthcare workforce development, and high-quality care across Saskatchewan.
