It’s National Volunteer Week! 💙 This week, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who help power so much of what happens across the CF community.

Could tiny droplets released by cells help show when a lung flare-up is starting before it becomes more serious? That is exactly what Dr. Augusto Zani and his team are exploring thanks to a Seed Grant from Cystic Fibrosis Canada!

By studying these tiny droplets or “messages” in the lungs, the team hopes to better understand what is happening during illness and recovery. Their findings could one day help doctors spot flare-ups earlier, see how treatments are working and reduce the need for more invasive tests.

What started as a small grant has already led to published findings, new follow-up studies and the potential for a whole new way of understanding CF lung infections.

Breaking news: if you volunteer with CF Canada (think Walk, Peer Connect, Bingo and more), free coffee may be yours ☕ Our Volunteer Portal Contest is still running!

For people living with rare cystic fibrosis mutations, treatment options are still limited and new approaches are needed. Dr. John Hanrahan has spent decades studying cystic fibrosis. Today, his focus is on changing that reality.

With support from Cystic Fibrosis Canada and Genome Que bec as part of a joint funding competition to back bold ideas that aim to reach people still waiting for effective treatments, his research is exploring gene editing to correct rare mutations. This critical research is aiming for solutions that go beyond managing symptoms to addressing the root cause.
