What actually happens after a DUI in Alberta?
Here’s what one impaired driving stop can trigger:
Immediate Consequences
90‑day licence suspension on the spot if you blow over 0.08 or refuse a breath test.
12‑month mandatory ignition interlock after the 90‑day suspension.
Vehicle seized for 30 days.
Minimum $1,000 fine for a first criminal conviction.
If Your BAC Is Between 0.05 and 0.079 (“Warn Range”)
Even if you’re under the criminal limit, Alberta still issues penalties:
3‑day licence suspension + 3‑day vehicle seizure + $300 fine for a first offence.
Penalties increase with each repeat offence.
Refusing a Breath Test
Refusal is treated the same or worse than failing:
Criminal charge
Minimum $1,200 fine (administrative)
Same suspensions and sanctions as blowing over 0.08.
Long‑Term Consequences
Criminal record that can affect employment and travel.
Insurance increases of 200–300% for at least three years.
Mandatory education programs like Planning Ahead or IMPACT, costing around $1,000+.
Bottom Line
A DUI isn’t “just a ticket.”
It affects your licence, your finances, your record, your freedom — and most importantly, it puts lives at risk.
Plan a safe ride. Every time.
