Our life size Phoenix wings project over the past 9 months, has been a beautiful reminder of just how powerful one idea can be! How moving it has been to have women, children, youth, staff and volunteers color feathers to bring this vision to life. One feather at a time.

Our wings are a visual reminder that we are all creators, and that together, we can create beauty around us. The feathers will forever represent all the people we walk with in this journey. A constant reminder that we never walk alone, and that one experience can truly create a ripple effect in such profound ways! The implications, everlasting β™‘

We look forward to showcasing our Phoenix wings at community events, taking pictures for program participants with their Phoenix wings, adding feathers to be colored to our welcome packages, and creating memorabilia of our wings in future projects. One idea can change everything!

We cannot wait to see how our Phoenix wings evolve over time. It truly takes a community in everything we do! For this, we are forever grateful.

Today, as we reflect on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we want to share a poem with the permission of writer, Misty-Lee Davis β™‘

On Indigenous Day we gather near,
With open hearts and spirits clear,
To honour stories, old and wise,
Passed through generations, beneath these skies.
We honour Elders, strong and true,
Whose teachings help us journey through,
The paths of healing, hope, and grace,
And finding strength in every place.
At Phoenix House we see each day,
How courage helps to light the way,
For women rising from the pain,
Learning how to live again.
Like the eagle soaring high above,
They find their strength, they find their love,
Reclaiming voices once unheard,
Finding power in every word.
The drumbeat echoes, strong and deep,
Awakening dreams they thought asleep,
Reminding all that they belong,
To stories rich, resilient, strong.
Like cedar bending in the storm,
Their spirits heal, their hearts transform,
Rooted firmly in the ground,
With ancient wisdom all around.
Today we celebrate and learn,
The sacred fires that still burn,
The cultures, languages, and ways,
That light our hearts and guide our days.
On Indigenous Day we proudly stand,
Together walking hand in hand,
Honouring the past while looking ahead,
Following the paths our ancestors tread.
And at Phoenix House we witness too,
The beauty born when hearts renew,
For healing, hope, and strength unite,
Like the morning sun’s returning light.

Every day, we all have a responsibility to demand an end to this ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2SLGBTQIA+) in Canada.

We encourage you to take a stand to end this violence.

Read the National Inquiry’s Final Report, learn about the 231 Calls to Justice. We all have a role to fulfill. A duty to humankind.
