Have your say on the Next Agricultural Policy Framework.
👉 DEADLINES:
National consultations for the Next Policy Framework are underway in two phases.
Phase 1: Open now until June 30, 2026.
Phase 2: Expected to begin Fall 2026.
Your input will help shape the future framework through an engagement process running until December 2027.

👉 CONSULTATION:
To contribute your input or provide comments about the NPF, complete the online consultation here: https://agriculture.canada.ca/en/department/transparency/public-opinion-research-consultations/share-ideas-next-agricultural-policy-framework-0.
If you have additional comments or questions, please contact [email protected].

👉 BACKGROUND:
The Next Policy Framework (2028-2033) is a five-year federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) investment designed to support the growth and resilience of Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector. It will succeed the current Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (2023-2028). To help shape the framework, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is consulting with Canadians from January 2026 to December 2027. Feedback on sector challenges and opportunities will help inform the framework's vision, priorities, and a policy statement to be announced by FPT Ministers.

👉 WHY YOUR VOICE MATTERS NOW:
The timing of these consultations is critical. Following the recent AAFC research cuts announced in early 2026- the future of public agricultural research in Canada is at a major crossroads. If you are concerned about the loss of public research capacity or climate resilience programs, this consultation is your direct pipeline to tell government officials where funding needs to be restored and prioritized.

🌱 We're accepting applications for our 2026 Cost-Share Program!
📅 Application deadline: June 30, 2026.
🔗 Website: manitobaorganics.com/cost-share-program

With continued support from the Conservation Trust (Manitoba Habitat Conservancy), this program helps Manitoba farmers implement projects that improve soil health and enhance biodiversity on their farms. This year, we've updated the program to reduce barriers and encourage new participants to apply. Funding is available to farmers across Manitoba, you do not need to be an organic producer to apply.

Approved projects are eligible for 50:50 cost-share funding, with funding caps of up to $10,000 depending on project size. If you're planning a project that supports healthier soils and greater biodiversity, we'd like to hear from you.

Cost-share program is accepting applications for the 2025 year. If you've implemented sustainable agriculture practices on your farm, you may be eligible for funding.

Farmers can expect higher seed prices and more privatization of plant breeding as multinational seed companies cash in on exclusive control over new varieties enabled by the new Plant Breeders’ Rights regulation passed on April 23.

Organizations from across Canada have sent a joint letter to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada expressing urgent concern regarding the planned closure of the Organic and Regenerative Research Program at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre.

The letter follows the recent report of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, "Science in Canadian Agriculture and the Closure of Research Centres", which recommended that the Government of Canada “reconsider its decision to cancel the organic and regenerative program at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre.” The signors are calling on AAFC to immediately pause any actions that could compromise long-term organically managed trial land and authorize planned 2026 field operations to proceed.

The Organic and Regenerative Research Program is the only dedicated organic research program at AAFC and, in contrast to facility closures, is slated for closure at a research facility that remains fully operational.
