Festival of Flags is presently completing Phase 3 of the Placentia Bay Military History Project, in partnership with The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 33, Placentia. Festival of Flags is carrying out research on Placentia Bay military personnel who served in the Korean War and Peacekeeping in Phase 3, which is funded by Government of NL. Phase 1 and 11 focused on research of the military service

of Placentia Bay men and women in WW 1 and WW 11

Festival of Flags would like to invite you to visit the Placentia Bay Military History Research findings on WW 1 and WW 11, available for your review and input on www.placentiabay.ca. If you can provide information to Festival of Flags about the military history of Placentia Bay servicemen and women who served in the Korean War and/or in Peacekeeping, we will be very happy to record it. You are invited to provide your input to us regarding collected data that needs to be corrected. In 2010, Festival of Flags filed a funding application with the Community Memorial Program, Veterans Affairs and is hoping to receive final approval of its commemorative project early in 2014. Festival of Flags has approached larger corporations in our business community Province of NL. In a second initiative in June, 2014, the Festival of Flags plans to present the highly acclaimed "Argentia at War" exhibit that contains the Atlantic Charter Declaration, at the Marine Atlantic Terminal Building at Argentia, to acknowledge the 100th anniversary of WW 1 in 2014 and the 70th anniversary of WW 11 in 2015. "Argentia at War", developed in partnership with the Provincial Museum of NL in 1997-98, was exhibited at the Argentia Visitor Center in 1998 - 2012 and constitutes Phase 11 of the proposed International Museum of World Peace. It will be situated in Marine Atlantic's Grand Room, with its ocean side panoramic view of the Atlantic Charter site and the iconic Isaacs rock. "Argentia at War" speaks to the sacrifices made by the people of Argentia and Marquise in 1941, when their communities were demolished to make way for the construction of the United States Military Base, which served as the strategic center for the defense of the North Atlantic during WW 11 and the Cold War years. "Argentia at War" traces the American occupation at Argentia over 54 years until the base was phased out in the fall of 1994; it makes Argentia's historic connection through the Atlantic Charter to the international community and the United Nations. To date, sponsors of "Argentia at War" at Marine Atlantic are: Festival of Flags, Town of Placentia, Argentia Management Authority, Placentia Area Historical Society, Marine Atlantic, Placentia Area Development Association and Metalworld, Argentia.
