According to National Geographic, "There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea." That is about 700 pieces of garbage for every human being living on earth, and that’s solely garbage in the oceans. Our role in this catastrophe is to re-ignite the f
lame in our human hearts to start taking care of our world again because it is the only one we'll ever have. Our first cleanup was completed on July 1st at Frenchman’s bay. We bought our own gloves, bags and got straight to work. When I say we, I’m referring to four young ambitious men. The cleanup was a success but afterwards we came to the harsh conclusion that four people alone would not be able to change the world. That is why we started PickWaste, a community organization that meets every Saturday morning to focus on cleaning up local parks, schools and any dirty landscapes. Participating in a cleanup is a wonderful way for our students in the community to get their service hours completed for high school. That being said it does not matter how old or young you are, we can all make a difference at any stage of our lives. We have also gotten the City of Pickering involved and they have supplied us with guidance, gloves, bags, and the means of disposal. The next step in our movement is to get YOU involved. Each human being on this earth has a unique call to action, a major purpose in life that we must strive to figure out..but one of the universal obligations is to care for our common home. Sign a personal contract with yourself right now to "be the change you want to see in the world." Bring plastic bags with you on walks and fill it with garbage, you'd be surprised on how quickly it gets full. Send us pictures of the clean ups you’re doing, and let’s change the world together. Make sure you follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter so that you can share our posts and help us get the movement out there! We hope to see everybody taking action and helping PickWaste.
