🌊 World Lake Day reminds us that Lake Ontario is home to an incredible diversity of salmonids.

From the Salmo, Oncorhynchus, and Salvelinus genera, these fish have become an important part of Lake Ontario's ecosystem, recreational opportunities, and connection to our waterways.

Each species depends on healthy lakes, rivers, and streams to complete its life cycle. What happens in our tributaries affects the lake, and what happens in the lake affects the fish that return home to spawn.

Today, restoration efforts are helping bring Atlantic salmon back to their historic waters, while ongoing stewardship supports the health of all salmonid populations throughout the watershed.

Every fish released, every stream restored, and every student who learns about salmon helps support the future of Lake Ontario.
💙 Happy Lake Day!

Phragmites may look beautiful at this time of year, but their impact on our ecosystems is anything but!

Often called North America's worst invasive species, phragmites forms dense monoculture stands that crowd out native plants. These thick networks provide poor habitat and food for wildlife, including species at risk like snapping turtles.

Beyond the environmental damage, phragmites also negatively impacts recreational activities like swimming, boating, and angling. That’s why the Invading Species Awareness Program is working to manage this plant with help from the Ontario Phragmites Action Program.

You can help prevent the spread of phragmites by washing your boats, boots, and ATVs to limit the spread to new areas.

Did you know, predicting when salmon will hatch can be done using math?

ATUs (Accumulated Thermal Units) are used to measure development time of fertilized eggs.
1 ATU = 1°C for 24 hours

For example:
• 10°C for 24 hours = 10 ATUs
• 5°C for 24 hours = 5 ATUs
Atlantic salmon eggs typically hatch at around 500 ATUs.
In our classroom hatchery program, eggs are kept at approximately 4°C.

❓ Can you solve the salmon math?
If the eggs need about 500 ATUs to hatch and the water stays at 4°C, how many days do you think it will take before we see the first alevins emerge?
