ATU 1320 is thankful that Peterborough City Council voted 100 percent in favour of our contract and ratified our deal last night. The union is happy with our new fair and equitable contract; another 5 years of moving Peterborough.

ATU 1320 officially endorses Phil Jolicoeur for Northcrest in the City of Peterborough Municipal Election. Phil has proven to us that if elected, he will be a public transit minded member of council. You have our vote, Phil.

Back in August, when I officially launched my campaign for Ward 5 Northcrest, I laid out some of my priorities for public transit in Peterborough. I talked about keeping transit public, improving reliability and accessibility, listening to riders, and making sure the people operating our system can do their jobs safely.

On September 9, I had the opportunity to sit down with ATU Local 1320 President Cory MacLeod and dig much deeper into those priorities.

Cory had questions for me, and I had plenty for him.

We talked about staffing shortages, cancelled trips, funding, the need for more drivers and buses, and what it will actually take to build a more reliable system.

We also talked about operator safety. Drivers have faced assaults, harassment and being spit on while simply doing their jobs. ATU has been advocating for proper safety barriers and stronger protections, and I believe that deserves serious attention.

One of my biggest takeaways was that better transit cannot focus on just one group of riders. Trent and Fleming students need reliable service, but so do seniors, people with disabilities, shift workers, families and residents across Peterborough.

Cory was open about where the system is falling short, and I appreciated that. His focus was not only on his drivers, but also on current riders, potential riders and how we make public transit work better for everyone.

We also agreed that positive relationships matter. Council, City staff, frontline workers and riders need to be able to sit at the same table, ask difficult questions and actually listen to the answers.

I left even more committed to keeping Peterborough Transit public, supporting safer working conditions, improving accountability and building a system people can depend on.

Today ATU 1320 met with Peterborough mayoral candidate Neil Morton. Neil previously came for a ride on the bus with us (the only candidate to do so thus far) and now came for a visit with us at the union hall.

Neil listened to the concerns of the union intently and spoke about his conversations on the campaign trail. Neil spoke about being proactive rather than reactive if he becomes mayor and that putting the needs of residents would come first for him.

We told Neil about the need for more bus frequency, and the need for more community buses to serve the seniors of Peterborough. We were impressed with how Neil was interested to hear about the necessity of transit funding and how it is not an expense, but rather an investment in the future of Peterborough. Neil joined several other municipal candidates in signing the ATU PLEDGE - that if he is elected to Peterborough City Council, he will vote to KEEP TRANSIT PUBLIC and that he will vote to fund transit in line with the transportation master plan! ATU 1320 met with Phil Jolicoeur who is running for Peterborough Council in Ward 5, Northcrest. Phil is an entrepreneur from the marketing sector who supports small businesses and not-for-profits. Phil has extensive experience in the mental health sector and described himself as a common sense community servant. Phil is running for council to develop a road map forward for Peterborough; Phil told us he is tired of slogans and it’s time for real action. Phil spoke about the homeless epidemic and how mental health and harm reduction need to work together.

Phil spoke about how public transit shouldn’t be a privilege as it is a necessity for all. Phil agreed that funding public transit is an investment that he would get behind if elected. Phil joined several other municipal candidates in signing the ATU PLEDGE - that if he is elected to Peterborough City Council, he will vote to KEEP TRANSIT PUBLIC and that he will vote to fund transit in line with the transportation master plan!
