The wonderful Joy Lachica stopped by the ATU 1320 union hall today and signed the ATU PLEDGE - that if she is reelected to Peterborough City Council, she will vote to KEEP TRANSIT PUBLIC and that she would vote to fund transit in line with the transportation master plan. Assaults against ATU 1320 Transit Operators are on the rise, and this could have been much worse. We need proper barriers installed on all City Transit vehicles to keep our drivers safe. If you agree, please tell the mayor and council to approve the purchase of proper bus barriers.

14 YEAR OLD FACING CHARGES FROM INCIDENT ON A CITY BUS

A 14-year-old Peterborough male is facing several charges after an incident on a City of Peterborough transit bus Thursday.

At approximately 3:15pm on June 4, 2026, officers were called to the area of Parkhill Road and Armour Road after a report of a passenger with a knife. Upon arrival, officers learned that the driver had stopped the bus and the suspect had exited the bus, dropped something in the grass and was walking on Armour Road. Officers located a male matching the description given to police and took him into custody. During a search after arrest, officers located a sword and bear mace on the suspect.

Through investigation it was further learned that the suspect, who had been wearing a face mask, had punched and verbally threatened another teenaged passenger on the bus.

As a result, a 14-year-old Peterborough male was arrested and charged with:
• Assault
• Uttering Threats - Cause death or Bodily Harm
• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Carrying concealed weapon
• Disguise with Intent

The accused was released on an undertaking with conditions and will appear in court July 13, 2026.

As of Monday ATU 1320 is in Contract Negotiations with The City of Peterborough. Our members deserve a fair and equitable contract. We move Peterborough and our professional Transit Operators and Garage staff are looking for new language and compensation in a contract that is worthy of their hard work. Stay tuned! Today ATU 1320 President MacLeod and executive board members from CUPE 126 met with candidate Ashley Bonner who is running for council in Peterborough for Ashburnham ward. Ashley spoke about her experiences, her platform, and listened to the union’s concerns about making sure council ensures city services are well funded operationally. Ashley took the ATU 1320 PLEDGE, that if elected she would vote to KEEP TRANSIT PUBLIC, and that she would vote YES to fund Peterborough Transit Operations and Infrastructure in line with the City’s Master Transportation Plan. Today, President MacLeod of ATU 1320 and Jesse Horrigan of CUPE 504 and his board met with mayoral candidate Keith Riel at the ATU Union Hall. Keith talked shop about the importance of labour in Peterborough. After verbally committing to keep transit a priority as mayor, he put pen to paper and took the ATU 1320 PLEDGE, to KEEP TRANSIT PUBLIC, and that he would vote YES to fund Peterborough Transit Operations and Infrastructure in line with the City’s Master Transportation Plan. Today, ATU 1320 was visited by ATU International Health and Safety Director Andrew Falotico. After a tour of our facilities and preparing with our worker JHSC members, Brother Falotico joined our committee to discuss bus barriers and all manner of transit safety issues. A portion of the $1,732,762 transit funding provided by Ontario needs to go to retrofitting The City of Peterborough’s Transit fleet with proper barriers to protect drivers against rising assaults. No more assaults!!
