Gender binaries and rigid ideas about s*xuality, identity, and expression were not present in Indigenous cultures before settler contact - these concepts were brought over and enforced by white colonial settlers. The term "Two-Spirit" came to Cree Elder Myra Laramee in a vision in 1990 and is used to this day, however there have been terms used to describe Two-Spirit folks across Indigenous languages since time immemorial. Two-Spirit folks have always been on this land, and an important part of reconciliation is language revitalization so these terms and phrases are not lost. We've included some different terms here, as well as information about Ontario Native Women's Association (ONWA)'s 2SLGBTQQIA+ toolkit, "Love Build the Bundle", which can be accessed at onwa.ca/love

Please note that all terms were found using the references below, and do not encompass all terms used within Indigenous language for gender identity and s*xuality. The spellings of these terms and their meanings were found using the references linked below- please note that spelling of these words may vary from group to group or person to person, or may have changed over time due to loss of language and culture from the impacts of colonization.

We're back with another influential person highlight for this second week of Pride Month and Indigenous History Month. Kiley May (she/they) is a Two-Spirit, transgender artist, storyteller, actress, and author. Kiley is Hotinonshón:ni, Kanien'kéha (Mohawk) and Ohswé:ken (Six Nations of the Grand River) and a member of Turtle Clan. She has current roles in Sheriff Countryand Allegiance, has had roles in projects like Coroner and It: Chapter 2, and in 2020 they were awarded the Magee TV Diverse Screenwriters Award

In an interview with Fashion Magazine, Kiley was quoted saying " I want to shift the narrative of transgender representation from what historically has been tragic and victimizing to one that’s thriving and about love and happiness."

All of us at KSAC want to extend a huge, heartfelt thank you to the Morton Family Foundation for their incredibly generous donation of $15 000 towards KSAC's human trafficking survivor supports. This donation, made in response to the recent news about KSAC's loss of our federal human trafficking funding, is so greatly appreciated by us and by the survivors who rely on our services and supports. We could not continue to do this work without the support of wonderful community members, and we cannot thank the Morton Family Foundation enough for their commitment to supporting survivors of s*xual violence and human trafficking in this community.

There are so many events happening across the four counties this summer for Pride! While June is globally recognized as Pride month, many counties in this area host Pride events throughout the summer during different weeks, which we think is a great way to extend the Pride love year-round!

We've shared some of the events happening this month in Trent Hills, Northumberland, and Hiawatha First Nation that you can checkout throughout June. Additionally, we've included some information about Pride events coming up later this summer: you have Kawartha Lakes Pride to look forward to in July, Pride in the Highlands (Haliburton Highlands area) in August, and Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride in September! We'll keep updating as we learn about more events. Happy Pride!

Workplace s*xual harassment can have serious effects on a person's mental health and personal life. The first week of June is recognized as as Sexual Harassment Prevention Week. According to Ontario's Human Right's Code, any unwelcome advances, jokes, or comments made against an individual because of their race, religion, gender, gender expression, s*xual orientation, ethnicity, and physical limitations are considered workplace harassment. Workplace s*xual harassment falls under the broader category of workplace harassment, and is specifically related to discrimination based on s*x and engaging in unwanted s*xual conduct.

Here's a fact sheet to learn about the definition of s*xual harassment and find resources where you can report including anonymous reporting: ohrc.on.ca/en/s*xual-harassment-employment-fact-sheet
