This has been a very sad week. Our condolences to the families, friends and police forces of these brave men.

This week, Ontario lost two police officers in the line of duty: OPP Constable Tarun Bali and Toronto Police Constable Marc Pinizzotto.

Constable Bali was killed while helping apprehend a man who had reportedly escaped from a hospital where he was being held under the Mental Health Act. Constable Pinizzotto was shot and killed while executing a warrant as part of a major criminal investigation linked to a series of shootings, including an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Toronto.

Today, we honour their service, their sacrifice, and the families, friends, and fellow officers left behind to grieve.

But honouring these officers also means asking difficult questions.

In Constable Bali's case, Canadians deserve answers about how a person being held under a mental health detention order was able to escape custody in the first place. What safeguards failed? What policies were not followed? Could this tragedy have been prevented?

In Constable Pinizzotto's case, Canadians deserve answers about the growing presence of individuals linked to investigations involving Iranian-backed extremist activity on Canadian soil. Reports have suggested the U.S. Consulate shooting was being investigated as a national security matter with possible ties to an Iranian-backed network. If foreign regimes and their proxies are able to operate, recruit, intimidate, or carry out acts of violence in Canada, how did we allow that threat to take root here?

Police officers accept the risks that come with the badge. What they should not have to face are dangers made worse by failures in the systems that are supposed to protect both the public and those sworn to serve it.

The best way to honour Constable Bali and Constable Pinizzotto is not with flags at half-mast and memorials. It's by demanding accountability, learning from these tragedies, and taking action to prevent them from happening again.

Please join us in remembering these two fallen officers and keeping their families, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts.

Rest in peace, Constable Tarun Bali.

Rest in peace, Constable Marc Pinizzotto.

It is with deep sorrow that I confirm that OPP Provincial Constable Tarun Bali was killed in the line of duty this afternoon in Hearst. His courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten. As we grieve this immeasurable loss, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues and the policing community.

They say that no two days in policing are ever the same.

New recruit Cst. Pickles and his coach officer Cst. Peddie rescued this lil injured guy in Wasauksing and brought him to the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Rosseau for some TLC.

Miigwech to the homeowner who discovered him, wrapped him in a towel, and kept him safe until we could get there.

We have to admit, it was hard to hand him over; we were already so fawn’d of him. 🦌
