On Wednesday, Samaritan House Ottawa and Arlington Woods Church welcomed our neighbours for a barbecue and housewarming for the newest Samaritan House residence!

It was so lovely and heartwarming to see so many community members turn out for this event, and to get to meet and talk with many of you. We all enjoyed the delicious food Arlington Woods volunteers prepared, and we enjoyed the community even more!

We were delighted to have City Councillor Sean Devine and a representative from the office of Mark Carney in attendance as well! Councillor Devine was instrumental in mobilizing the event, and we are very grateful for his support.

Thank you for being the good Samaritans refugee claimants need when they first arrive in Canada. Our work would not be possible without your support.

Today we celebrate the people, communities, and values that make Canada a place so many are proud to call home.

At Samaritan House Ottawa, we have the privilege of welcoming refugee claimants who have come to Canada seeking safety, hope, and the opportunity to build a new future. Every new beginning reminds us that the strength of our country is found not only in its landscapes and history, but in the compassion we show one another.

Whether you've lived here your whole life or are celebrating your very first Canada Day, we hope today is filled with connection, kindness, and gratitude.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and neighbours who help make Ottawa a welcoming place for those starting over. Together, we're building a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

What keeps a house feeling like home?

A warm shower after a long day.
A light left on when someone comes home.
A kitchen where meals can be shared.
Heat in the winter. Water every day.

These are things most of us don't think twice about—but they're essential to creating a safe, stable place where refugee claimants can begin rebuilding their lives.

Today, we're launching our Keep the Lights On campaign with a goal of raising $10,000 to cover the cost of utilities for one Samaritan House Ottawa residence for the rest of 2026.

To us, that call is not abstract. It looks like opening our doors to refugee claimants arriving in our community with urgent needs and immense courage. It looks like offering a bed, food, settlement support, and a safe place to begin again. It looks like choosing compassion, dignity, and welcome.

Today, we honour the strength, resilience, and humanity of refugees around the world — and especially the individuals and families we have the privilege of walking alongside here in Ottawa.

World Refugee Day is also an invitation: to see our neighbours clearly, to respond with mercy, and to build a community where newcomers are welcomed not with suspicion, but with care.

To every refugee claimant beginning a new chapter far from home: we see you, we honour your courage, and we are glad to walk alongside you.
