Behind every statistic is a person looking for safety, stability, and the chance to begin again. 💚

For refugee claimants arriving in Ottawa, finding safety in Canada doesn’t mean the challenges are over. Many face housing insecurity, poverty, barriers to employment, and months of uncertainty as they navigate the refugee claim process.

And these challenges affect children, too.

These numbers are why the work of Samaritan House Ottawa matters. A safe place to live, nutritious food, settlement support, and a welcoming community can give someone the stability they need to focus on what comes next.

☀️ **One last summer barbecue!** 🌭

We wrapped up our summer barbecue season with a wonderful afternoon at one of our Samaritan House Ottawa residences, surrounded by neighbours, friends, and community partners.

It was a joy to see so many people from the neighbourhood come together with members of our partner churches to share a meal, meet our residents, and spend time getting to know one another. We were also delighted to welcome Councillor Tim Tierney to join us!

A huge thank you to the entire Ottaw Refugee Ministry for their incredible organization and support of this event, and to the amazing young volunteers who took care of everything from setup and cooking to teardown. Your energy and willingness to serve made the whole afternoon possible. ❤️

These barbecues are about more than sharing a meal. They’re an opportunity to build connections between our residents and their new neighbours, strengthen relationships across our community, and create the kind of welcome and belonging we hope every newcomer to Ottawa can experience.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this summer. We’re grateful for every conversation, every new connection, and every person who helped us make our neighbourhoods a little more welcoming.

Sometimes, a leap of faith is followed by an open door.

When Samaritan House Ottawa was first incorporated on December 17, 2023, there was no house, no funding for staff, no furniture, and no food. Just a calling, a committed group of people, and faith that a way forward would appear.

Four days later, we had a house.

Then the community stepped in. Someone offered to buy the beds. Someone else brought blankets, pillows, and towels. Piece by piece, what had begun as a prayer became a home ready to welcome refugee claimants arriving in Ottawa.

For our founder, Doreen Katto, those early days remain a powerful reminder of the faith at the heart of Samaritan House: “We prayed everything into being.”

Today, that same faith continues to guide our work—and every donor, volunteer, partner, and neighbour who joins us becomes part of the story.

The refugee process doesn’t end when someone arrives in Canada. For many refugee claimants, arrival is the beginning of a long and uncertain journey.

There are applications to complete, eligibility decisions to navigate, hearings to prepare for, and months—or even years—spent waiting for an outcome. In the meantime, people still need somewhere safe to sleep, food to eat, a community to belong to, and support as they begin rebuilding their lives.

That’s where Samaritan House Ottawa comes in. 💚

We provide refugee claimants with safe housing, nutritious meals, settlement support, essential resources, and a welcoming community while they take their next steps in Canada.

Samaritan House Open House BBQ– come visit the home and learn about the volunteer roles

Date: Sunday August 23rd 5-7pm

Volunteer at Samaritan Refugee Home

The bible is filled with God’s call to take care of the refugee and foreigner amongst us (Deuteronomy 10:18-19, Psalms 146:9, Malachi 3:5, Matthew 25:31-46); really it’s the golden rule of Jesus to “love your neighbour as yourself’.

Who: Anyone who is willing to go through the screening process which includes a vulnerable sector police check (depending on the role some training which we provide will be needed)

What: there are a variety of volunteer roles available

When: once a month at your convivence

At night, they could sleep in emergency shelters.

By morning, they had to leave.

No daytime space. No lunch. No programming. Just... nowhere to be.

That’s why they asked the church if they could stay there during the day.

We keep talking about crisis response, but sometimes the real issue is what happens after the first night.

$55 a day to support one refugee.

That number stops me every time.
Save this and send it to someone who thinks one donation doesn’t matter.

Because at Samaritan House, even a $150 gift can cover meals for an entire house for a day.
Everything costs money - food, beds, settlement services, all of it.

And when prices keep going up, every dollar has to stretch harder.
That’s why compassion only becomes real when it turns into action.

Not later. Not someday. Right now.
What feels like a small gift to you can mean a full day of meals for someone else.
Maybe that’s the part people forget.
