Documenting bird-glass collisions. Interested in joining us? Visit: safewings.ca/support-us/volunteer/ Safe Wings Ottawa is a program of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club to reduce bird mortality from window collisions through rescue, research and education. Our mission is to learn more about the extent of the problem in Ottawa, to raise awareness about the causes of window strikes, and to encour

age solutions for making glass visible to birds. Visit safewings.ca to find out how you can help save birds, one window at a time. COVID precautions: Volunteers must abide by all relevant local and provincial COVID-related restrictions and protocols while engaged in Safe Wings Ottawa activities. These may include but are not limited to rules regarding mask-wearing, physical distancing, gatherings, and close contacts. Please do not take any unnecessary risks. PLEASE NOTE: We are an entirely volunteer-run organization with no paid regular drivers or rescuers. When you call about a bird in need of help and you are willing to help us by containing and and transporting the bird if needed, it goes a long way in helping the birds receive the care they need.

*****DRIVER no longer needed, she didn't make it 😭**** From Ottawa to Napanee (near Kingston). Is anyone heading to Toronto or Kingston in the next day or two? Do you mind a short side trip and a small passenger? This lovely lady Mallard was hit by a car and needs to go to Sandy Pines in Napanee for ongoing care.

REASON #342 WHY PLASTIC GARDEN NETTING IS DANGEROUS FOR BIRDS!!
This goose got all tangled in garden netting from its beak to its feet. Thanks to Jacqueline for calling us, staying with the bird until our volunteers could arrive, and helping with the capture.
In some ways it was good that it got caught in such a big piece, as it couldn't fly and our volunteers were able to catch it, but it wouldn't have lasted long without being able to eat or escape predators. Unfortunately one eye was injured, potentially by rubbing against the plastic.
Wire mesh like chicken wire is a safer option. If you must use plastic, a finer mesh is safer.

****DRIVER found, thanks Kim**** This lovely turkey needs a ride from Hintonburg to the Wild Bird Care Centre around 4 pm (bird is coming from another area, WBCC closes at 5). It could go earlier if you can pick up near Rue Main east of Hull.

A reminder that Spring migration is underway and Ottawa-Gatineau’s birds need your help to safely move through our built landscape! 🌷🌻🪻

Each Spring and Fall our feathered friends travel thousands of kilometres to their seasonal homes. We can help make sure they don’t succumb to preventable fatalities like window strikes shown here.

These species (and scavenged feathers) were found in just one day.

Please treat your windows, sign up to volunteer patrol with us and keep an eye out for any birds you may find in the coming weeks. Tell your friends and family too! ❤️

Not sure where to get started? Visit our website at safewings.ca and complete our volunteer application today. Our birds thank you ❤️🪶🕊️

📻 Be sure to listen to our March 19, 2026 interview on CBC radio One! Janette Niwa, a Safe Wings Ottawa volunteer, checks public buildings each morning for birds killed by glass collisions. The non-profit aims to reduce avian casualties through research and advocacy. Safe Wings volunteers collect all dead birds found for a one-afternoon display at the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Just search the episode name wherever you listen to live radio or through the CBC radio app! 🪺

Thanks to everyone who checked! The turkey seems to be ok, although it's not in a very safe place. Please keep an eye out for it!
We've had a couple people reach out to us about a turkey at Fallowfields and Greenbank at the side of the road, not moving. Is anyone near the area who can check if it's still there? Please let us know in the comments if you can check.

We don’t often post on this page for other groups but Caitlin's Critters Wildlife Orphanage is always willing to step in if we need a place for a bird to be held awaiting transfer. Let’s help get these little ones into care!
