Tungasuvvingat Inuit

Tungasuvvingat Inuit TI is a registered non-profit. Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) aims at empowering and enhancing the lives of Inuit across Canada.

Tungasuvvingat Inuit means, "A place where Inuit are welcome"

Tungasuvvingat Inuit is the only Inuit-specific, provincial service provider of its kind in urban Canada with more than 20 highly integrated front-line services. Since 1987 TI has been operating in Ottawa as a community-based counselling and resource centre. TI was first established as the result of an Inuit needs assessment study whic

h clearly demonstrated the necessity for a service geared to the unique culture and needs of Inuit clients adjusting to the urban living. Since then, the programs at TI have expanded to accommodate the growing Inuit population. TI is the only established Inuit specific service organization of its kind in urban Canada and as a result it is called upon to provide advice and support to other agencies across the province and country (eg. shelters, courts, hospitals, schools). For these agencies, TI provides:
- Information on Inuit culture and values
- Resource information for Inuit specific programming
- Understanding of Inuit Rights in the City
- Information on financial assistance for Inuit post-secondary students

TI focuses on providing clients with programs
and services that:
- Include Inuit country food
- Assists with the adjustment to an urban centre
- Maintain client confidentiality
- Promotes individual and community healing through culturally appropriate programming
- Provides a place for Inuit to gather with other Inuit
