When Should You Repot a Phalaenopsis Orchid?
Phalaenopsis orchids should generally be repotted every 1 to 2 years, or whenever the potting mix begins to break down. Old bark retains too much moisture, reducing airflow around the roots and increasing the risk of rot.
Signs that indicate that it is time to repot your orchid include:
• Potting mix that stays wet for too long or smells musty
• Roots growing heavily over the edge of the pot
• Dead or rotting roots
• The plant becoming unstable or outgrowing its container
The best time to repot is after flowering, when new roots and leaves are beginning to grow. Remove old potting material and cut away dead roots.
Orchids don't like to be overpotted so choose a pot that fits the roots and use a fresh orchid bark mix designed for good drainage and airflow.
