Today, on the 6th of December 1989, 14 young students at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were murdered. They were murdered because they were women.
Each year, we gather to hold a vigil commemorating the victims of the Montreal Massacre, as well as each life taken by violence against women and gender-based violence in our community since the previous year.

In light of recent news and calls from Indigenous peoples across the country to declare a national state of emergency for MMIWG2S+, this years vigil will be in solidarity with Indigenous women, girls & 2SLGBTQIA+ folks.

The Women’s Event Network of Ottawa seeks to raise awareness of the phenomenon of gender-based violence in our society. This is an opportunity to acknowledge the courage and strength of survivors, and to reflect on how we can eliminate violence against women and gender-based violence in all forms.

Hi folks, we are working on getting the vigil running as soon as we can. Unfortunately, because of technical issues with Zoom, we aren't able to go live, which also means we will not be able to have an opening prayer. The vigil is pre-recorded, so we will switch to that. Thanks for your understanding and we hope that you'll be able to access the program soon.

Attention All, the vigil will begin tonight at 6pm. It can be accessed through this link bit.ly/wenottawa

Women’s Events Network Response to COVID-19

Please note that the annual ClothesLine Event, normally scheduled for late May, will be delayed due to the disruption in the community from COVID-19.

We will post information about planning for this event when Public Health informs the city that we are clear to resume normal activities.

In the meantime, all agencies that form the Women’s Events network wish you good health and safety for you and your families during this difficult time.

The WEN Team

It is with regret that the Ottawa Women’s Events Network (WEN) didn’t clearly communicate to presenters that they would receive an honourarium at the end of the December 6 vigil and panel on MMIWG2S. We recognize that can create an undue burden on contributors – leaving them unclear about their standing with respect to payment, and how to access it. We are committed to recognizing Indigenous contributors’ tireless activism and dedication that occurs in the community, by:

- Providing an honourarium for Indigenous Elders and contributors at public events;

- Discussing and agreeing together an appropriate amount and timing of payment according to the person’s needs, at the time of invitation.

This is part of an ongoing learning process, and we are open to ongoing critique and feedback to improve how we work.
