A couple of months ago, I heard a phrase that shocked me. I was disappointed in myself for being so oblivious.
If course I am immersed in the indie music culture.
I go to events, I am in awe everytime I see an artist rocking out on stage...but, silly, naive me, I see humans up there...I don't see gender, I don't see conformity, I don't see labels that need to be defined, because that IS the community of indie music.
But, because of that, what I didn't see was the gap that was there and the stigma that was attached to this gap.
The gap?
When you look at a music festival lineup, it is mostly made up of male-led bands.
🤔Hmmmm well, yes now that I think about it, that is true...my next question I wondered, was why...
Well, Erin Maiden from the band FERAL UNION was given a theory as to why. Although this theory made me cringe and then really pi**ed me off when I heard it, I knew deep in my heart it was one that a LOT of people in the industry believed.
So Erin had a choice. She could sit, stew on it, go to her keyboard and hit little buttons that would turn her anger into words on a screen, maybe start a heated discussion for 15 minutes and then the world would go on. OR she could prove to every biased, close-minded, judgemental person in the industry they are WRONG!
Anybody out there who is lucky enough to know Erin already knows what Erin did before reading the article that I was so lucky to write.
In two nights, with the help of Christina at CHORD Productions and the girls at the Rainbow Bistro, Erin showed everyone that the indie music audience LOVES their artists - no matter WHO is behind the microphone!
So, to the person who decided he was going to say indirectly that the indie community only supports music festivals because the bands are led by male musicians - on March 6 and 7th at the Rainbow Bistro, the whole indie community lifted our middle fingers to you and said 🖕
To Erin, her amazing team, and all the powerhouse women that stepped on that stage (and all the amazing backing men that supported the women that night - we saw you too - boy did we see you too 😉) on behalf of everyone, THANK YOU.
Thank you for fighting for making a difference. For keeping music alive. For believing the audience will come out and support your dream. For creating the amazing music we all need to get through our days.
For letting us be part of your amazing journey.
THANK YOU.
We can't wait for the second annual Feral FemmeFest. 🤘❤️

SATURDAY NIGHT HEADLINERS - photo by Laura CollinsThere’s a specific kind of magic that happens in a room when everyone present knows they are part of something that wasn’t "supposed" to work. You can feel it in the floorboards—a vibration that’s half-distorted bass and half-defiant joy. Thi...
