To our current monthly donors: thank you. 💚

Your steady support is already helping make safe, compassionate care possible for women and children at Nelson House.

Because of supporters like you, in 2025–2026 Nelson House provided safe shelter to 65 women and children, responded to 1,026 crisis calls, and supported 55 women and families through our transitional housing support program.

Every one of those numbers represents a woman or family met with care, and you are part of making that possible.

As Nelson House has opened 4 additional beds and continues responding to increasingly complex needs, steady monthly support matters more than ever.

If you are a current monthly donor and a small boost to your monthly gift feels possible at this time, it can help provide more consistent access to additional supports and programs, like art therapy, yoga, self-defence, and flexible care for women and families.

This is simply an invitation for those who are able. Your current monthly gift already makes a meaningful difference, and we are deeply grateful. 💙

To increase your monthly gift, email the Nelson House team at [email protected] for support and instructions.

Thank you for already being part of the steady care and growing impact on the lives of women and families at Nelson House.

Thank you to Guy and Bateman for their thoughtful donation to the women at Nelson House.

They graciously donated beautiful gift bags filled with Mary Kay skincare products for residents currently staying at the shelter. The handmade bags, lovingly created by Deirdre’s mother, added an extra special touch to this generous act of kindness.

Moments like these remind the women and children we serve that their community cares and that they are not alone. We are so grateful for your generosity and look forward to continued partnership and support 💜

This spring, staff and residents at Nelson House are beginning a community garden together.

It’s a simple thing, in some ways. Soil. Seeds. A shared space in the backyard.

But it also reflects something real about the work of healing. Rebuilding life after violence is not only about emergency response. It is also about creating safe, steady conditions where women and children can begin again.

Where someone can exhale.
Where a child can begin to feel routine return.
Where healing can take root.

When you join The Safe Haven Support Circle and become a monthly donor, you help create room for care, stability, and renewal, one month at a time.

The Supreme Court of Canada has officially recognized a new tort of intimate partner violence.

This landmark decision acknowledges that intimate partner violence is not limited to physical abuse. It can also include coercive control, emotional abuse, intimidation, isolation, and financial abuse. The Court recognized that these forms of abuse can deeply impact a survivor’s dignity, autonomy, equality, and mental well being.

Across the gender based violence sector, advocates and support organizations continue to emphasize the importance of recognizing the realities and long lasting harms of intimate partner violence. This decision represents an important step forward for survivors across Canada.

This week is Victims and Survivors of Crime Week

In Canada, intimate partner violence continues to impact thousands of women every year. Women are more likely than men to experience intimate partner violence, and many survivors continue to face emotional, physical, financial, and psychological impacts long after the abuse ends.

At Nelson House, we see the realities behind these numbers every day. Women and children arrive seeking safety, support, and the chance to begin again.
Healing takes time, compassion, and a community that shows up for survivors.

This week, we honour the strength and resilience of victims and survivors of intimate partner violence and reaffirm our commitment to providing safe shelter, support, and pathways toward healing.

This week, we honour the courage of survivors and reaffirm our commitment to providing safe shelter, support, and pathways toward healing for women and children experiencing violence.

If you or someone you know needs support, help is available.

Today, we honour and remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit people. Red Dress Day is a powerful reminder of the ongoing impacts of violence and the urgent need for justice, safety, and meaningful change.

At Nelson House, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and recognize the importance of listening, learning, and taking action to support safety and healing.
We honour the lives lost, the families impacted, and the strength of those who continue to advocate for change.
