A Friendly Voice is a free, confidential “warm line” for older adults aged 55 and above living in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island). It’s a welcoming space where seniors can freely connect with a caring individual without expectations or judgment. A Friendly Voice is a social service program offered in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces by Rural Ottawa South Support Services (ROSSS).

Staying active, eating well, and managing stress all play a role in heart health, but so does emotional well-being. Feeling connected and supported can help reduce stress and improve overall health.

A meaningful conversation, a shared laugh, or simply feeling heard can be good for the heart too. This month, take a moment to check in with yourself and do something kind for your heart, both physically and emotionally.

Our volunteers don’t answer the phone to fix problems or give advice. They answer because they believe listening matters.

Each conversation is built on patience, empathy, and genuine care. Many volunteers tell us they feel just as grateful for the calls they receive as the people they speak with.

This work is about human connection, shared moments, and being present for someone else. We are deeply thankful for the volunteers who make that possible every single day.

We came across a wonderful initiative at the Springville Senior Center in Utah, where a group of seniors came together to complete a 60,000-piece puzzle over several months. What an incredible achievement.

More than just a puzzle, this project created shared purpose, conversation, and connection. Seniors worked side by side, piece by piece, building not only a stunning image but also meaningful relationships along the way.

Stories like this remind us how powerful simple activities can be in bringing people together and easing feelings of loneliness. Whether it’s working on a puzzle, sharing a memory, or having a conversation, connection truly matters.
