Today is Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness and Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People in Canada. Inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black’s REDress Project, empty red dresses are displayed in public spaces as powerful symbols of lives lost and the ongoing crisis of violence against Indigenous women. In Canada, Indigenous women are far more likely to go missing or be murdered than non-Indigenous women, a stark reflection of longstanding, systemic issues rooted in colonialism.
Red Dress Day honours those who have been lost, raises awareness, and calls for meaningful action. It also highlights the need to address the systemic causes of violence and to advance the 231 Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
