Background
The last year or so MICA has been exploring ways to support caregivers planning for when they are gone or are no longer able to provide for the required supports. We listened to caregivers – many aging – about their fears and plans for their loved one’s future.
What we heard - caregivers (and the person(s) they care for) are ill-prepared for the future – they want
o Assistance to put plans in place for the future
o Support for a range of planning needs
o Support to implement future care plans
o Supports in place that foster trusting long-term relationships
Our response – a planning guide
Based on what we heard, MICA in consultation with caregivers and subject matter experts has developed a planning guide. The intent is to keep it simple but we also understand the plan needs to address some of the challenges in more detail from providing for personal and community supports, as well as trusted legal, financial and property management supports.
workshop details
The workshop will include a facilitated discussion around what supports caregivers provide for those they care for and what their plan needs to include to both address the gaps and to ensure continuity of care when they are gone or no longer able to provide for the required supports.
The workshop participants will be invited to join our efforts going forward as we continue to develop the planning guide. A planning guide that ensures caregivers (and the person(s) they care for) are confident they are “prepared and have addressed the uncertain and unknown”
