Mission Accomplished!!👏💙⭐

The Rotaract Club of Ottawa is a youth-led collective uplifting our community through meaningful action. Through their “Backpacks of Hope” initiative, team members prepared 60 backpacks (pics below) filled with essential items such as socks, gloves, hygiene essentials, snacks, and a guide to local support services for people experiencing homelessness this winter. OFR was absolutely thrilled when they connected with us as part of this initiative!

For the final step, the backpacks were shared with Belong Ottawa for distribution to those in need through their community programs. 💙🙌

We are inspired by the compassion and leadership of these young changemakers!

OFR would also like to thank those who sponsored a backpack. Your support has made a meaningful difference!🙏

Food Affordability Is Reshaping Daily Life for Canadians

Recent national surveys show that rising food costs are now the most pressing financial concern for individual and family budgets, surpassing even housing and health care expenses. For the majority of Canadians, buying groceries has shifted from a routine task to a source of stress and constant calculation. Rising food costs are starting to exceed what feels manageable.

As inflation continues, shopping habits are changing: Canadians are searching more diligently for sales, switching to lower-cost stores and brands, using promotional purchase points and sadly, reducing the variety, quality, and quantity of foods they buy. These adjustments have begun to be about survival versus preference. Canadians are making daily trade-offs and rethinking what “affordable” means in a system that no longer feels predictable.

While some relief measures have been announced at the federal level, uncertainty remains. Experts warn that global trade pressures and economic instability could continue to affect food prices, leaving many bracing for ongoing strain.

What is clear, is that food affordability is no longer a background issue, highlighting the ever-expanding need for quick action that includes long-term solutions to protect mental well-being, physical health, and dignity.

*Food Insecurity in Ottawa -- 2026
In 2026, food insecurity still affects far too many families and individuals; parents, children, students, seniors on fixed incomes, people on social assistance, newcomers, and even those who are fully employed. Many rely on food support programs just to get by, some missing meals altogether. Rising costs of rent, groceries, and basic necessities continue to outpace wages and social supports, forcing households into impossible choices.

In 2025, the Ottawa Food Bank and its community agencies recorded nearly 589,000 visits, more than double just a few years earlier. The system is at a tipping point, reaching its limits and beginning to falter.

*Hope in Ottawa’s Commitment to Help
While food insecurity gets exacerbated through systemic conditions, hope is emerging via other parts of the system, particularly via government and municipal responses. Coordinating with provincial and federal partners, The City of Ottawa has made a commitment to action via strategies that address the root causes of food insecurity, not just emergency food distribution. Details: https://www.ottawafoodbank.ca/.../City-of-Ottawa-Commits...

With the care and dedication we hold for this work, it’s encouraging to see a shift in stepping away from a sole focus on emergency food relief and managing consequences, toward systemic solutions that aim to address core causes and prevention.
