For more than three decades, Azerbaijanis have come together each year on January 20 to remember the victims of 1990, when Soviet troops violently crushed Azerbaijan’s movement for independence.

The events of that day claimed many lives and exposed the brutality of the USSR’s response, permanently shattering public confidence in Soviet rule.

Known as Black January, this tragedy became a defining moment of national mourning, strengthening the Azerbaijani people’s resolve for sovereignty and contributing to the broader unraveling of the Soviet Union.

On December 25, 2024, Azerbaijan Airlines Flight J2-8243, en route from Baku to Grozny, tragically crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. The disaster claimed 38 lives, including the two Azerbaijani pilots, while 29 passengers miraculously survived, though many remain critically injured.

Preliminary investigations reveal the pilots faced unimaginable challenges: a suspected bird strike and severe GPS interference. Despite these obstacles, the pilots demonstrated extraordinary bravery and professionalism, doing everything in their power to safeguard the lives on board. Their heroic efforts likely minimized the tragedy’s scope, saving many passengers under dire circumstances.

This somber moment is a testament to their dedication, reminding us of the unwavering commitment of aviation professionals to safety, even at the cost of their own lives.

Our thoughts are with the victims, survivors, and their loved ones. May the memory of the pilots’ courage inspire us all. 🕊
