A quick update on the Strawberry Creek trails on Kruger Mountain after the Eagle Bluff Fire:
Please note, this is still an active wildfire area, and we are not encouraging recreating in the area yet. There are many active hotspots, some on the trails themselves, several large trees have fallen (and will continue to do so over the coming weeks), and a handful of trail features will need to be rebuilt.
That said, we are encouraged by what we've seen so far on the lower quarter of the mountain. There are many completely untouched, green areas, many of the larger trees within the burn zones held up very well and will likely survive, and the lower parts of the trails at Strawberry Creek are 95% clear of ash.
The health of the trails relative to the surrounding forest may lead to one other hazard, as there are many signs of increased wildlife use. Upside Down in particular looks like a safe corridor through the charred forest in many areas and, as a result, is littered with far more animal tracks and bear s**t than we've seen in the past.
Please note, this may be a climb-only area for several weeks. Not only is Kruger Mountain Road to the shuttle location still closed, but even after it opens it will be important to remember that the fire burned from the bottom of the mountain to the top, so the top will take longer to recover. Based on what we've seen so far, the hazards increase as altitude increases - large active hotspots can be seen from town near the trails at the peak, and we would recommend not venturing any higher than Cowbell.
For XC lovers, Moon Cursor and Grasshopper are largely intact, but again, the sagebrush around them was all but decimated and will take some time to recover. If you are going to use the trails, please stay on the routes.
The South Slopes still need to be assessed. Initial looks at Borderline suggest that large pockets of wooded areas are alive and well, but Personality Disorder is mostly ash.
