Bat researchers are working together to study and monitor endangered bats. We are looking for landowners with bats in all counties of Nova Scotia. If you have bats on your property, please get in touch for more information by contacting Taryn at [email protected]. Thank you for helping us help bats!

This research is a collaboration between the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, the Canadian National Bat Box Project, and Acadia University. Research includes collecting guano (p**p), swabbing active boxes, and counting bats to aid population monitoring.

A BIG thank you thank you to Acadia University’s Art and the Environment class members for volunteering their artwork to our project.

Professor Judith Leidl deserves a big thank you for bringing in artist Twila Robar-Decoste (who has also donated her piece) to help lead the workshop on bat artwork!

We will be auctioning off the pieces as soon as we get them framed and ready for distribution. With the funds we will purchase more lumber and non-toxic stain and continue getting our boxes out into the community!

Thanks so much to everyone involved!

Another huge thank you to Central Kings High school. Their students build 28 boxes for us to be distributed throughout the summer.

We appreciate the school's continued support and the staff and students responsible for getting this done during a complicated COVID school year! Their ability to combine the hard skills of woodworking with the added benefit of conservation could bring up an increasingly dedicated generation of conservation minded individuals! Now comes the process of applying the non-toxic stain, then off to your backyard!

Those who have been patiently waiting may be getting an email soon! Hold on tight!

Calling landowners with bats on their properties!

Do you have bats on your property? Are you interested in being part of a research study on bat colony health?

I am conducting an honours research study through Acadia looking for evidence of white-nose syndrome and intestinal parasites in bat colonies across Nova Scotia by collecting guano (p**p) from inhabited roosts. If you have a known summer roost for bats, i.e. a bat box or barn that bats consistently visit in the summer, and are interested in being part of this study, please fill out the form below. Selected properties would be visited for guano collections periodically throughout the summer (May-September). These visits may be timed with bat roost emergences and may occur in the late evening. All research will be conducted using appropriate decontamination protocols to prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome. If you sign up for this study, you may revoke your consent at any time. Further details will be communicated to those interested closer to the start date of the study. Please share this post far and wide!

Got questions? You can contact me at [email protected]

We are looking for landowners (or people in a stable renting situation) with an active, accessible bat roost on their property (i.e. an occupied bat box or barn) to participate in an undergraduate research study on white-nose syndrome. Researchers will need access to the property throughout the spri...
