Meet Spirit!
This handsome, affectionate, and curious young pup has come such a long way in just 11 short weeks. When he first arrived, Spirit was emaciated, matted, and terrified—just a shy, skeletal figure on the brink of death. For the first 13 months of his life, he was kept in a crate, starved, and neglected alongside his sister. Tragically, help came too late for her—but Spirit’s will to live never gave up.
At first, Spirit was terrified to leave the safety of his foster home. He would resist getting into vehicles, panicked at the thought of being abandoned again. He devoured every meal like it might be his last, and he had frequent accidents as his body adjusted to proper nutrition for the first time. But with patience, love, and time, Spirit began to heal—his strength returned, his spark came back, and his playful, silly personality began to shine.
Today, Spirit is fully house-trained and will go to the door when he needs to go out. He enjoys tug-of-war, zoomies, and “keep away” with his favorite toys. His recall is improving daily, and while he’s still working on leash manners (especially around birds and small critters), he’s learning to walk politely with a gentle leader. He responds well to positive reinforcement and knows commands like sit, stay, and shake—even with just a simple hand signal.
Spirit is a total cuddle bug and deeply bonded to his foster mom. He loves affection and is happiest snuggled up close. While he can be a bit hesitant around some men, with a calm and gentle introduction at his level, he opens up quickly. He’s not destructive when left alone for short periods, and while he doesn’t love being crated with the door closed (understandably so), he will nap in his crate willingly during the day.
He gets along well with most dogs when introduced properly and has made a few new dog friends in the neighborhood. He hasn’t been tested with cats but has been good with respectful children—though he may get excited and jump during play, as he’s still learning.
A home with a fenced yard would be ideal, along with regular walks or hikes to continue building his confidence and exposure to the world. Now that he’s at a healthy weight, he’ll benefit from seasonal grooming and nail trims to keep him feeling his best.
Spirit still gets excited at mealtime but shows no food aggression. His meals are split into four servings a day to support healthy digestion, as he’s not a grazer. One of his new favorite things? Car rides! He loves to feel the breeze and take in the views.
At the end of the day, you’ll find Spirit curled up on the couch, and when he hears “bedtime,” he trots upstairs to his favorite spot on the bed and sleeps soundly through the night. He only barks to alert when someone’s at the door but quickly warms up to visitors—usually by running to grab a toy to proudly show them.
This beautiful boy is truly a joy. He’s full of love, resilience, and personality, and he’s ready for a forever home where he can keep growing, learning, and just being the happy, playful pup he was always meant to be.
