🌟 Jimmy Chan’s Documentary “Saving Chinatown” Sheds Light on a Community in Crisis 🌟

A Story of Resilience, Heritage, and Hope

Jimmy Chan, founder of One World One Humanity, is no stranger to hard work. As a filmmaker, community leader, and advocate, he has dedicated his life to preserving and protecting Montreal’s Chinatown. His latest documentary, Saving Chinatown: The Rise of the Dragons, is a heartfelt tribute to the community’s resilience in the face of gentrification, racism, and economic challenges.

A Community Under Threat
Montreal’s Chinatown, once a bustling hub of culture and commerce, has faced significant challenges in recent years. The pandemic exacerbated issues like anti-Asian racism, vandalism, and the threat of gentrification. Jimmy’s documentary captures these struggles, highlighting the urgent need to protect Chinatown as a heritage site.

“I stay up nights worrying about developers buying up historic buildings and turning the area into a sort of Disneyland,” Jimmy says. “Chinatown must be protected and recognized as a heritage site.”

A Labor of Love
Jimmy spent three years and $100,000 of his own funds to create Saving Chinatown. The film documents the community’s fight to survive, from the rise in hate crimes during the pandemic to the efforts of residents and merchants to keep Chinatown vibrant.

One powerful scene in the documentary shows a young woman being accosted by a masked man on the métro, while another highlights the racism faced by long-time residents. These stories underscore the importance of standing together against hate and injustice.

Taking Action
Jimmy didn’t stop at filmmaking. In March 2021, he helped create a volunteer security patrol team to protect Chinatown’s elders, residents, and businesses. His efforts have brought hope to a community grappling with fear and uncertainty.

“Business in the area has come around a little, but it’s still very slow,” Jimmy notes. “The fear factor, in terms of racism, still remains.”

A Legacy of Service
Jimmy’s dedication to Chinatown is part of a lifelong commitment to community service. From founding One World One Humanity to donating over 5,000 meals to frontline workers during the pandemic, Jimmy’s work has touched countless lives.

Now, he’s planning a follow-up documentary to delve deeper into the lives of Chinatown families, ensuring their stories are heard and their heritage preserved.

Join the Movement
Saving Chinatown is more than a film—it’s a call to action. Let’s come together to protect and celebrate this vital part of Montreal’s cultural fabric.

🌟 A Historic Victory for Montreal’s Chinatown 🌟
Heritage Status Granted After Years of Advocacy

We are thrilled to share a monumental achievement for Montreal’s Chinatown! After years of relentless advocacy, Quebec’s government has officially granted heritage status to the core of Chinatown, protecting it from further gentrification and preserving its cultural legacy for future generations.

This victory is the result of tireless efforts by community leaders, including Jimmy Chan, founder of One World One Humanity and a passionate advocate for Chinatown. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jimmy has been at the forefront of the fight to protect Chinatown from racial assaults, vandalism, and the threat of gentrification.

“This is a significant step forward, but the battle is not over yet,” Jimmy said. “There is still much work to be done to ensure Chinatown thrives as a vibrant cultural hub for generations to come.”

The heritage status is a testament to the resilience and unity of the Chinese community and its allies. It recognizes the historical and cultural significance of Chinatown, which has been a cornerstone of Montreal’s diversity for over a century.

While we celebrate this milestone, we remain committed to addressing the challenges that still lie ahead. Together, we can continue to protect, preserve, and uplift Chinatown as a symbol of heritage, community, and hope.

Let’s honor this achievement and keep pushing for a brighter future for Chinatown! 💙

🌟 Jimmy Chan Speaks Out Against Anti-Asian Racism on CBC Montreal 🌟
Advocating for Education and Cultural Understanding

On April 10, 2022, Jimmy Chan, founder of One World One Humanity and a prominent leader in Montreal’s Chinese community, was interviewed by CBC Montreal to address the recent surge in anti-Asian racism, particularly in schools.

Racially offensive worksheets and messages have been circulating on school campuses, targeting the Asian community. Jimmy emphasized that racism against Asians is not new—it has existed since the first Chinese immigrants arrived in Canada over a century ago.

“Racism against the Asian community has always been there,” Jimmy told CBC. “It never goes away. But now is the time to take action.”

Jimmy called on the Quebec and Federal governments to implement educational programs that teach students and adults about different cultures, including the history and contributions of the Chinese community. He believes that education is key to fostering understanding, empathy, and respect among all communities.

“We need special courses in schools and cultural programs to teach people about immigrants’ cultures,” Jimmy said. “We need to learn from each other, understand where we come from, and appreciate the contributions we’ve made to build this country.”

Jimmy’s advocacy highlights the urgent need for systemic change to combat racism and promote unity. His vision for a more inclusive and educated society is a powerful reminder of the importance of standing together against hate.

🌟 Calls for Action Grow Amid Rise in Anti-Asian Racism 🌟
Jimmy Chan Advocates for Community Safety and Justice

The Montreal Gazette recently highlighted the alarming rise in anti-Asian racism and hate crimes in Montreal, featuring Jimmy Chan, President of the Chan Association and founder of One World One Humanity.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Montreal’s Asian community has faced a surge in racially motivated attacks, vandalism, and harassment. According to Montreal police, 22 hate crimes and 8 hate incidents targeting Asian individuals were reported in 2020—a stark increase from just 3 of each in 2019. Tragically, many of these incidents are linked to anti-Asian sentiment surrounding the pandemic.

Jimmy Chan has been at the forefront of efforts to protect Chinatown and its residents. In response to a wave of vandalism and violence, Jimmy formed the Montreal Chinatown Security Patrol Team, a volunteer group that patrolled the streets from August to December 2020.

“I formed the Montreal Chinatown security patrol team,” Jimmy said. “It started in early August, all the way until Christmas last year.”

His efforts led to increased police presence in Chinatown, with two officers assigned to the area in November. However, Jimmy emphasized that more needs to be done, especially during nighttime hours when most incidents occur.

Community leaders and organizations are now calling for a stronger, better-equipped hate crimes unit within the Montreal police force. Councillor Marvin Rotrand presented a motion to city council to address this issue, but it was sent for further study, leaving many concerned about delays in action.

Jimmy’s advocacy and leadership have been instrumental in raising awareness and ensuring the safety of Montreal’s Asian community. His work reminds us of the importance of standing together against racism and hate.

🌟 Jimmy Chan Speaks Out Against Rising Hate Crimes in Montreal 🌟
Advocating for Safety and Justice During the Pandemic

The founder of One World One Humanity, Jimmy Chan, was recently interviewed by Global News to address the alarming increase in hate crimes targeting Montreal’s Asian community since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Montreal police, 30 hate-related incidents were reported between March and December 2020, a significant rise compared to just 6 incidents in 2019. These crimes included vandalism, graffiti, and racially motivated attacks, with one-third of the cases directly linked to anti-Asian sentiment related to the pandemic.

Jimmy Chan, who also serves as the President of the Chan Association, shared his firsthand experience of the fear and uncertainty that gripped Chinatown during this time.

“In one single night, there were seven stores with their windows smashed in,” Jimmy recounted. “The pandemic made it clear that racism is strongly in place in the community.”

In response to the surge in violence, Jimmy took action by launching the first-ever Chinatown Security Service, a citizen-led patrol initiative that provided much-needed safety and reassurance to the community.

“Almost every night, we would station in Chinatown patrolling. It wasn’t easy, but people felt secure,” Jimmy explained.

Following community outcry, the city of Montreal and the police increased foot patrols and surveillance in Chinatown. However, Jimmy emphasizes the importance of speaking up and reporting incidents to ensure accountability and justice.

“People need to speak up. We have our right, our space, and a right to speak,” Jimmy stated.

Jimmy’s leadership and advocacy have been instrumental in raising awareness about the challenges faced by Montreal’s Asian community. His efforts remind us of the importance of standing together against racism and hate.

For more details, you can watch the full interview and read the article on Global News:

🌟 Jimmy Chan Takes Action to Protect Chinatown During the Pandemic 🌟
A Leader’s Response to Racism, Vandalism, and Community Safety

The COVID-19 pandemic brought not only health challenges but also a rise in racism and vandalism, particularly targeting Montreal’s Chinatown. In March 2020, as the world went into lockdown, Chinatown faced a wave of hate crimes, including smashed windows and doors at restaurants and shops. The fear and uncertainty among residents, workers, and visitors were palpable, and as the President of the Montreal Chan Association and a leader in the Chinese community, Jimmy Chan knew he had to act.

Jimmy immediately took the matter into his own hands. He organized Zoom meetings with city officials and met with police to request increased foot patrols in Chinatown. However, recognizing the urgency of the situation, Jimmy didn’t wait for external solutions. He created the first community watchdog system, educating residents and merchants to stay vigilant and watch out for one another.

But Jimmy knew this wasn’t enough. He reached out to his friend Eddy Li, owner of a security company, to help establish a Chinatown security patrol project. Together, they formed a team to protect the community, ensuring the safety of elderly residents, workers, and visitors. Every day after his regular work, Jimmy dedicated his time to overseeing the patrols, addressing issues, and ensuring Chinatown remained a safe space for everyone.

The pandemic had turned Chinatown into a target for vandalism and a gathering spot for the homeless and drug users. Jimmy’s efforts not only reduced these risks but also restored a sense of security and hope to the community. His leadership and dedication have inspired the next generation to join in volunteer efforts, creating a stronger, safer community for the future.

Jimmy’s work is far from over. Through the One World One Humanity Humanitarian Volunteer Program, he continues to raise awareness about the challenges faced by communities like Chinatown, not just in Montreal but around the world. His vision is to inspire others to take action and make the world a better place.

Let’s celebrate Jimmy’s unwavering commitment to protecting and uplifting his community. His efforts remind us that even in the face of adversity, we can come together to create positive change. 💙
