Last week, we welcomed 47 startups from 23 countries into the timbuktoo ecosystem after 3 months of masterclasses, mentoring, customer discovery, and investment readiness prep. Now, meet the founders behind them, in their own words. A new video every week.

First up: Clinton Adoga, founder of FarmLens (Kenya). FarmLens is an Agri-EdTech platform that provides AI-powered, multilingual agricultural education to help smallholder farmers adopt climate-smart practices and improve productivity.

In Kigali, UNDP Rwanda Resident Representative Fatmata Lovetta Sesay gave a tour of the timbuktoo HealthTech Hub to Prof. Philip Cotton, Vice Chancellor of the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), and Billy Stewart, Director of Development at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
The delegation met the startups driving healthtech innovation at the Hub and spoke with the teams behind solutions transforming healthcare delivery across the continent.

Discussions explored how universities, startups and innovation hubs can work together to support young innovators, connect ideas to opportunities and strengthen Africa’s healthtech ecosystem.

Call for Applications: timbuktoo LaunchPad for HealthTech Startups

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through its timbuktoo initiative and the timbuktoo HealthTech Hub in Kigali, Rwanda, is inviting Africa's most promising health technology startups to apply for its timbuktoo LaunchPad. If you are building solutions that transform healthcare across the continent, this is your opportunity to be incubated, mentored, and connected to a continent-wide network of partners, experts, and investors. This call is open Pan-African-wide: HealthTech startups from anywhere in Africa are welcome to apply, whether or not an accredited incubator is yet based in their own country.

We are looking for startups working in:

· Telemedicine and digital health

· AI for healthcare and health data

· Medical devices and diagnostics

· Biotechnology

· Nutrition and wellness technology

· Health supply chain and logistics

Selected startups receive structured incubation through an accredited incubator, mentorship, access to the SIGMA digital platform, investment readiness support, and entry into the timbuktoo LaunchPad network.

Applications are open on a rolling basis. The Cohort 1 window has closed; new applications are now being considered for Cohort 2, starting December 2026.

A few moments from the Pan-African Mobile Circularity Hackathon in Accra are worth revisiting.

Over two days, young innovators from across Africa learned, exchanged ideas, worked in teams and pitched solutions addressing the growing challenge of mobile and electronic waste.

The result? Three winning solutions with the potential to make e-waste collection and recycling more accessible and sustainable in their communities.

And this is where the story continues. With support from UNDP, Samsung Electronics and the UniPod initiative, the teams will take their ideas forward.

You’ve built the solution. Now, let’s take it to the next level.

The METI-funded UniPods AI Programme, in partnership with METI Japan, is open to individual innovators and teams developing AI or AI-enabled solutions at the early prototype, MVP (Minimum Viable Product), or early-stage venture stage.

No pitch decks. Just real code.

The programme offers AI technical skilling, structured prototyping support and entrepreneurship training, including a 14-week Wadhwani programme covering customer discovery, business modelling, go-to-market and investment readiness.

Selected innovators will also have the opportunity to participate in an in-person bootcamp in Addis Ababa, connect with technical mentors and engage with the wider timbuktoo network.

Meet the 47 startups from 23 countries that successfully completed the Get Ready 4 timbuktoo EdTech program, implemented by Pitch Palabre in partnership with UNDP under the timbuktoo initiative.

Over three months, these entrepreneurs took part in an intensive incubation journey combining interactive masterclasses, one-on-one mentoring and coaching, customer discovery and market validation, KPI tracking, weekly ex*****on challenges, and pitch preparation and investment readiness.

Congratulations to the entire cohort, and welcome to the timbuktoo ecosystem!

This week, Fab Managers from Benin, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Togo are coming together for the UniPods Hardware Program Fab Lab Training on Autodesk.

Through hands-on sessions in digital fabrication, 3D design, prototyping, and Autodesk tools, they are building the skills needed to support young innovators developing solutions for agriculture.

When they return to their UniPods, they'll lead the Hardware Innovation Program and help innovators transform ideas into working prototypes that respond to local challenges.

Thank you to UniPod Togo, Autodesk, the University of Lomé, and all participating UniPods for making this collaboration possible.

Together, we're strengthening Africa's innovation ecosystem, one prototype at a time.

A week of collaboration, learning, and co-creation has come to a close.

The SPARK Africa Co-Creation Workshop 2026 brought together local and international partners to explore Rwanda's innovation ecosystem, engage with entrepreneurs, and design challenge-based learning experiences for SPARK Africa 2027.

Together, participants developed the foundation for the 2027 Summer Residency, creating a curriculum and implementation roadmap that will help equip future innovators to tackle real-world challenges across Africa.

Thank you to the University of Rwanda, UNDP, Chalmers University of Technology, and all partner institutions for contributing to this shared vision.
