What if agriculture could create even more opportunities for young people in Angola?

That’s the vision behind the Angola AgriTech Hub (Centre of Excellence) ,a new initiative being established with UNDP.

Once developed, the Hub will support startups, promote innovation, and help transform agricultural value chains across the country.

Scaling innovation in Africa’s health space takes more than great ideas, it requires the right systems, partnerships, and long-term support.

During a visit to the timbuktoo Health Tech Hub in Kigali, students from University College London connected with UNDP’s timbuktoo initiative to better understand how startups are supported from idea to scale.

This was more than just a visit. As partners who supported the first cohort, including contributing to the Hub’s early development, they returned to see how far things have come. From early-stage ideas to startups now growing and evolving into real solutions, the progress speaks for itself.
The exchange also opened space for deeper collaboration, with a shared interest in continuing the journey together. The students left inspired, and keen to come back and stay connected to what’s being built.

Access to engineering and architecture tools shouldn’t be a barrier to learning, but for many students, it is.

Amanda Anderson, a 28-year-old architect and innovator Liberia, is changing that. After experiencing these challenges herself, she began producing affordable, high-quality tools using advanced technologies like laser cutting and Computer Numerical Control(CNC) machines.

With the support of UniPod Liberia, Amanda has turned her idea into a real solution, bridging gaps in education and helping students access what they need to succeed.

Josué Smith Mahulé Avikpo set out to rethink everyday transport in Lomé. As a master’s student in electrical engineering, he designed and built an electric tricycle as part of his research, offering a practical solution to the fuel dependent transport system he sees around him every day.

The tricycle carries up to 5 passengers and 500 kg, powered by a 1,200 watt motor and a 130Ah battery. It can reach speeds of 40 km/h and travel up to 162 km on a single charge, making it ideal for daily commuting in the city. Beyond performance, it significantly reduces emissions and lowers transport costs for users.

Today, the prototype is being tested at the University of Lomé, helping refine the design for real world use and future scale.

With support from through mentorship, technical training, and access to fabrication tools, Josué was able to turn his idea into a working solution, one that not only addresses mobility challenges but also contributes to a more sustainable future.

Over the past three days in Accra, Ghana, we brought together an inspiring group of incubator managers, ecosystem builders, and partners for the timbuktoo Bootcamp for Incubator Managers – AgriTech Track 🌍🌱From 16–18 March, this bootcamp facilitated by Kosmos Innovation Centre in partnership with UNDP Ghana created a powerful space for peer learning, honest reflection, and co-creation across Africa’s AgTech ecosystem.

Together, we explored:
🔹 The diversity and commonalities across African agricultural value chains
🔹 The key barriers and enablers shaping AgriTech startup success
🔹 Practical tools, frameworks, and lessons from leading incubators
🔹 Pathways from idea to commercialization for AgriTech ventures

What stood out most was the depth of experience in the room and the shared commitment to building stronger, more inclusive innovation ecosystems across the continent. The exchanges were rich, grounded, and forward-looking, exactly what is needed to shape impactful support models for startups. This bootcamp also marks an important milestone: the continued rollout of the timbuktoo AgTech Hub in Ghana, and the co-creation of a practical incubation blueprint that reflects the realities of African agricultural systems.

A big thank you to all participants, facilitators, and partners who contributed their insights and energy to this journey. The conversations don’t end here - this is just the beginning. Lets keep translate bold ideas into action, and supporting the next generation of Agri Tech innovators across Africa 🚀

Incubator leaders from across Africa recently gathered in Accra for the Bootcamp for Incubator Managers, strengthening the institutions that power the continent’s startup ecosystem. Representatives from 37+ African countries came together to exchange knowledge and build practical tools to better support founders - from strengthening deal flow and startup selection strategies to designing stronger incubation programmes and mentorship systems.

As highlighted during the bootcamp, strong entrepreneurial ecosystems require more than capital, they need capable institutions. Incubators play a critical role in helping transform ideas into viable startups and supporting founders as they scale. Delivered in partnership with 500 Global and supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan Supplementary Budget, the bootcamp is part of timbuktoo’s commitment to building stronger innovation ecosystems across Africa.
