1.

IJV Basis of Unity
(Revised 2020)

We are a group of Jews in Canada from diverse backgrounds, occupations and affiliations who share a strong commitment to social justice and universal human rights. We come together in the belief that the broad spectrum of opinion among the Jewish population of this country is not reflected by those institutions that claim to represent Jewish communities as a who

le. We further believe that individuals and groups within all communities should feel free to express their views on any issue of public concern without incurring accusations of disloyalty. We have therefore resolved to promote the expression of alternative Jewish voices, particularly in respect of the grave situation in the Middle East, which threatens the future of Palestinians and Israelis as well as the stability of the whole region. We affirm that human rights are universal and indivisible and should be upheld without exception.
2. We believe that all people living within Israel-Palestine have the right to freedom, equality, and to peaceful and secure lives.
3. We believe that the fight against antisemitism is undermined when principled opposition to unjust Israeli government policies and practices–including those that contravene international law–are branded as antisemitic.
4. We oppose all forms of racism, including antisemitism, anti-Arab racism, anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, and intra-Jewish racism, which marginalizes Jews of colour, Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews.
5. We stand in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (North America) in their efforts to overcome the impacts of European colonization both past and present.
6. We seek direction from the communities with whom we stand in solidarity and follow their leadership at every opportunity.
7. We strive to be inclusive, justice-seeking, democratic, and open to diverse ideas and practices.
8. We believe that true security requires justice and solidarity. We hereby reclaim the tradition of Jewish support for universal freedoms, human rights and social justice. The lessons we have learned from our own history compel us to speak out. These principles are violated when we allow an occupying power to trample the human rights of an occupied people. Palestinian inhabitants of the West Bank and Gaza, living under Israeli occupation and military blockade, face appalling living conditions, with desperately little hope for the future. At the same time, Palestinian Israelis are subjected to a range of discriminatory laws and regulations and are consequently unable to enjoy the same rights and freedoms that are enjoyed by Israeli Jews. This institutionalized discrimination has led increasing numbers of people around the world to identify Israel an apartheid state. We therefore declare our support for a properly negotiated peace between the Israeli and Palestinian people and oppose any attempt by the Israeli government to impose its own solutions on the Palestinians. Furthermore, we support full equality for Palestinian Israelis. To these ends, IJV supports the 2005 call issued by the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) National Committee for an international campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions to compel the State of Israel to comply with international law and support Palestinian Israelis’ human rights by:

1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall;
2. Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and
3. Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194.

As the new year begins, we hold Palestine and all those living under occupation, genocide, apartheid, siege, and displacement in our hearts.

In 2026, may our commitment to justice be louder than repression, our solidarity stronger than despair, and our care for one another rooted in action.

From all of us at Independent Jewish Voices Canada: wishing our communities resilience, safety, and moments of rest and joy in the year ahead. We continue, together.

Israel has announced it will ban 37 humanitarian organizations from operating in Gaza, including MSF, ActionAid, Oxfam, and the International Rescue Committee.

This comes as winter storms destroy tents, health systems collapse, and over a million people urgently need shelter, food, and medical care.

Smearing aid groups with unsubstantiated claims (just as Israel did with UNRWA) is a deliberate tactic to justify blocking lifesaving assistance and collectively punishing civilians.

Canada must move beyond empty statements and demand the immediate reversal of these bans and full humanitarian access to Gaza.

To our Christian siblings: Merry Christmas.

As many around the world gather to mark this season, we extend solidarity and care to our Christian siblings, especially Palestinian Christians in Gaza, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and across historic Palestine, who are once again marking Christmas under Israeli siege, occupation, apartheid, and genocide.

In the land where Jesus was born, churches are shuttered, families are displaced, and entire communities are being erased. Gaza’s Christian community has been devastated, with churches bombed and civilians killed, and Bethlehem’s streets once filled with pilgrims now silenced by military checkpoints and collective punishment.

A season that speaks of peace, humility, and care for the poor must also compel us to confront the violence, impunity, and systems that deny Palestinians the right to live freely and safely in their homeland.

We send love to all those grieving, resisting, and surviving. May this season strengthen our shared commitment to justice, accountability, and the liberation of Palestine.

In solidarity,

Canada says it “strongly condemns” Israel’s approval of 19 new illegal settlements, but condemnation without consequences is meaningless.

As Anita Anand invokes international law and a two-state solution, Canada continues business as usual: free trade, diplomatic cover, and zero accountability. Israel expands settlements, Palestinians are displaced, settler violence escalates – and Canada responds with words it knows Israel will ignore.

If settlements are illegal, as Minister Anand says, there must be consequences.

Independent Jewish Voices Canada repeats our demands clearly: immediate and meaningful sanctions, a complete break with CIFTA, and divestment from companies profiting from or sustaining violations of Palestinian rights.

Israel’s barring of a Canadian delegation to the West Bank is a stark reminder of the ongoing violences of apartheid rule. It is a brutal regime of military domination, suffocating restrictions, and collective punishment. Palestinians are being treated as a captive population, and are being hidden from international relationships to shield the oppressive regime from observation and scrutiny. MP Iqra Khalid was assaulted by an Israeli officer while members of the delegation were held for several hours and questioned. Canada cannot remain inactive.

It is long past time to sanction Israel, and this incident only renews the urgency for our country to take action. Canada must impose an arms embargo and targeted sanctions to stop Israel’s illegal annexation of the West Bank.

We are devastated by the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney. May the memories of the victims be a blessing 🕯️

We mourn those who were killed, hold the injured in our hearts, and extend our deepest solidarity to the Jewish community in Australia.

Antisemitism is real, deadly, and must be confronted, without being exploited to justify further violence, repression, or the silencing of others. Safety, dignity, and justice must be universal.

We are deeply grateful to Ahmed al Ahmad, whose courageous actions helped prevent further loss of life.

“Canada cannot claim to defend education, human rights, and equality while actively blocking Palestinian students from safety, from research, and from the futures they have already earned. These students have done everything that was asked of them — under conditions no student should ever have to endure. Now it is Canada’s turn to do the same.”

IJV Ottawa member Nir Hagigi speaking earlier this week on Canada’s systematic failure to bring Palestinian students who have been accepted to Canadian universities to Canada. Students in Gaza face unconscionable barriers to access education opportunities they have worked hard to earn, as Israel destroys all standing universities in Gaza, and continues to commit genocidal. Palestinian students deserve immediate action, and Canada must stop the never-ending delay.

“Our safety will never come from criminalizing others. Our safety will never come from silencing protest. Our safety will never come from expanding police power. Our safety will come from solidarity, from dismantling the structures that target all communities, and from rejecting any law that treats political dissent as a threat to public order. Bill C-9 will not make Jewish people safer.” IJV Ottawa member Nir Hagigi speaking at an urgent press conference this morning. Alongside a coalition of civil society organizations, including Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council, Public Service Alliance of Canada, International Civil Liberties Monitoring Gropu, Legal Support Committee, and Senator Yuen Pau Woo, IJV calls for the immediate withdrawal of Bill C-9 in its entirety.

Today marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Today, and every day, we stand in unwavering support of Palestinians and their struggle for justice, for an end to genocide and occupation, for liberation. For more than two years, we have witnessed Israel commit a live-streamed genocide. Today, we recommit ourselves to making our solidarity impossible to ignore. As anti-Zionist Jews, we refuse to let our culture, history, and traditions be distorted and used to justify occupation. We will continue to organize and fight for an end to Canadian complicity, and for true justice. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!

IJV condemns the arrest of peaceful protestors in London, Ontario, for participating in a demonstration outside of an arms conference. Warmongerers and profiteers are not welcome in our cities, and we will not allow our community members to be intimidated by police repression into silence.
