Le Fonds a été constitué en 2015 et a obtenu le statut d’organisme de bienfaisance en 2018.

On May 20th, join the Legacy Fund for the Environment and guest speaker Dr. Jochen Jaeger for a webinar on how and why Montreal's urban sprawl goes against our goal of a sustainable city — and how smart urban planning can still help us achieve that goal.

🧠 Abstract: Urban sprawl in Montreal has increased dramatically over the last 70 years, outpacing population growth and resulting in soil sealing, habitat loss, increased car dependency, and higher greenhouse gas emissions. Urban sprawl is the opposite of sustainability. Because traditional planning has been ineffective, this presentation proposes a framework of specific targets and limits to urban sprawl for Montreal to guide future development. By comparing seven scenarios for Montreal through 2070, the research identifies one sustainable pathway and highlights the urgent need for a greenbelt to protect agricultural lands and natural areas and slow down sprawl.

💌 All proceeds from this webinar go towards the Legacy Fund for the Environment's mission to empower citizen conservationists to use legal action to defend their local ecosystems, biodiversity, and rights against unchecked development.

🧠 Résumé : L'expansion urbaine à Montréal a augmenté de manière spectaculaire au cours des 70 dernières années, dépassant la croissance démographique et entraînant l'imperméabilisation des sols, la perte d'habitat, une dépendance accrue à la voiture et des émissions de gaz à effet de serre plus élevées. Comme la planification traditionnelle a été inefficace, cette présentation propose un cadre d'objectifs et de limites spécifiques pour guider le développement futur. Lac Crystal, an ultra-oligotrophic lake in Lanaudière and a proposed protected area, is threatened by an imminent logging operation. Despite Lac Crystal’s rare and valuable ecosystem, the Ministère des Ressources naturels et des Forêts (MRNF) has approved a logging project in its surrounding forest that local citizens are contesting as unreasonable and unlawful. The Association du Lac Crystal, a group of citizens concerned by the impacts of logging on this ecosystem and its biodiversity, are mobilising to fundraise $ 75 000 for an appeal for judicial review to revoke the MRNF’s decision.

Le lac Crystal, un lac ultra-oligotrophe en Lanaudière et une aire protégée proposée, est menacé par l’exploitation forestière. Malgré son caractère exceptionnel et reconnu, le ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts a pris une décision jugée déraisonnable et contraire à la loi d'y autoriser des coupes forestières. L'Association du Lac Crystal, un groupe de citoyens inquiets des conséquences des coupes forestières sur les écosystèmes et la biodiversité, se mobilise pour collecter $ 75 000 afin de financer un pourvoi en contrôle judiciaire afin d'annuler la décision du MRNF.
