🌻What a wonderful weekend in the sunflower field. 🌻
Last Saturday was especially memorable. The wind was so strong that at times it felt as though our tent might lift right off the ground — and even the popcorn machine was knocked over! Still, before our official 2:00 PM opening time, people were already arriving. By 1:30, our first visitors were out in the field looking for their favourite flowers.
Because of the wind, many people stayed for only about half an hour, but that didn’t seem to matter. They happily cut armfuls of sunflowers, took photos together, laughed, and enjoyed what was left of this colourful field at the end of the season.
One of the sweetest moments came when someone suddenly began singing the old song “You Are My Sunshine.” Standing among hundreds of yellow sunflowers, it somehow felt like exactly the right song. 🌻🎶
We met people who told us they had lived on Prince Edward Island for many years but had never visited the monastery before. Many families brought their children, and some of the smallest visitors quickly discovered that tall rows of sunflowers make a wonderful place for an adventure — and even a little game of hide-and-seek. Several families brought their dogs too, making the afternoon feel even more like a relaxed community gathering.
There were many small acts of kindness as well. One visitor told us that a friend had been injured and couldn’t come, so they picked extra flowers to take to them. We also met visitors who had travelled from as far away as New York and Toronto. Before heading back on the road, they left with sunflowers in their arms and popcorn from the monks to enjoy along the way. 🍿🌻
This weekend was not a fundraiser, but we were deeply touched that visitors still chose to support End Hunger in PEI. By the end of the weekend, we had received $246.26 in donations. Thank you for thinking of Island families even while simply coming out to enjoy the flowers. That kindness meant a great deal to us.
For us, the nicest part was simply seeing people leave smiling — some carrying one flower, others carrying enormous bouquets.
Thank you to everyone who came to spend a little time with us and helped give the last sunflowers of the season somewhere to go.
We hope your flowers brought a little sunshine into your home — or perhaps into someone else’s.
Thank you for a beautiful weekend.🙏
See you next year! 🌻🌻🌻
