In honor of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, join Speak Your Truth and Chachee’s Chai Markham Chachee’s Chai Cafe for an evening of tactile, creative resistance and deep reflection. We invite community members, artists, and activists to participate in an interactive, beginner-friendly Found Poetry & Blackout Poetry Workshop.
Using media and news prints alongside selected works from writers and thinkers including Edward Said’s Orientalism, Angela Davis’s Women, Race & Class, Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth, and poetry by Mahmoud Darwish, we will cut, fragment, and black out existing text to uncover new meanings and challenge dominant narratives.
We will also engage with works by Indigenous poets and writers, including Lee Maracle’s Blind Justice and Joy Harjo’s For Calling the Spirit Back from Wandering the Earth in Its Human Feet.
Together, we’ll reflect on our responsibilities as settlers on this land and process the realities of displacement, state violence, and systemic erasure.
This creative space is intentionally designed to bridge local and global conversations. As we honor the survival and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island, we will also turn our reflections outward—examining shared threads of resistance and solidarity with occupied and displaced Indigenous populations globally, including Palestine.
No prior writing or art experience is necessary.
All materials—including texts, news prints, markers, scissors, and paper—will be provided, alongside a curated selection of writing prompts to guide your reflection.
