The land has always been our teacher.

Ugs’tqamu Na’gweg [Earth Day] is a time to reflect on our relationship with the land and the responsibility we all share to care for it. The land, waters, and all living beings are part of who we are.

As Mi’gmaq, stewardship is not just something we talk about, it’s something we live.

Stewardship is about honouring our responsibility to the land, waters, and all our relations.

At Keki’namuanen Msit Wen Wlo’tmnen Nmaqami’kminu Inc., we support that responsibility by protecting lands across Mi’gma’gi for our communities and future generations.

Go out on the land. Observe and learn. Move with respect. Take only what you need. Pass that knowledge on.

In fall 2023, a collaboration began across Wabanaki territory bringing together Peskotomuhkati, Wolastoqey, and Mi’kmaq partners, alongside organizations like Community Forests International and the Nature Trust of New Brunswick.

The goal was to protect endangered Wabanaki forest land and return it to Indigenous care.

Over 18 months, more than 10,000 acres were protected.

This work reflects a shift toward Indigenous-led stewardship, grounded in trust, relationships, and the understanding that these lands have never been ceded.

It also reinforces the Peace and Friendship Treaties and the responsibility we continue to hold to care for our lands and waters.

World Water Day 🌊

Water (samqwan) is life. For the Mi’gmaq, it has always shaped how we move through our territory, how we sustain ourselves, and how we stay connected to each other and to the land.

Our waterways are not just routes, they are teachers. They carry knowledge about where we come from, and how we are meant to live within our territory. Across Mi’gma’gi, rivers, lakes, and coastal waters continue to support our communities.

At Keki’namuanen Msit Wen Wlo’tmnen Nmaqami’kminu Inc., we know that healthy water systems support everything, from the species we rely on to the overall health of the lands and environments they move through.

Take care of the water around you. Pay attention to it, respect it, and speak up when it needs to be protected.

🌲 International Day of Forests 🌲

For the Mi’gmaq, the forest has always been more than just trees. It has been our pharmacy, our classroom, our grocery store, and our place of ceremony.

For generations, our people have relied on the forest for medicines, food, materials, and teachings. Because of this relationship, caring for the forest has always been part of our responsibility as Mi’gmaq people.

Today we’re highlighting just a few cultural keystone species found in our forests that have supported Mi’gmaq life for generations.

➡️ Swipe to learn about 4 important species from our forests and why they matter to our people.

🌱 First Day of Siggw (Spring) 🌱

This season is marked by sismo'qonapu (sweet water), when the maple sap begins to flow.

Across Mi'gma'gi, life is picking back up. Gaspereau are moving through the rivers, shorebirds are returning, and animals like muin (bear) and lentuk (deer) becoming more active.

For us, it’s a reminder of why this work matters. When land and water are healthy, these seasonal cycles can continue.

At Keki’namuanen Msit Wen Wlo’tmnen Nmaqami’kminu, we’re working to protect and care for these lands so these natural cycles can continue to support all who rely on them.

Updates were also shared on what’s ahead, including the start of Wabanaki Partnership Funding Agreement negotiations, with continued funding to support land acquisition through MTI and Fort Folly over the next several years!

This AGM was hosted by our friends at Anquotum! Thank you to Nelson Cloud for the wonderful photos!

KMWWN Inc. was founded in 2020!

Keki’namuanen Msit Wen Wlo’tmnen Nmaqami’kminu (KMWWN Inc.) was created through a shared vision between Fort Folly Habitat Recovery, MTI - Mi'gmawe'l Tplu'taqnn Inc.,and North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council - NSMTC .

Together, these organizations recognized the need for an Indigenous-led land trust, one that could protect land in a structured, long-term way, while being grounded in Mi’gmaq values, knowledge, and responsibilities.

From that collaboration, KMWWN became one of the first Indigenous land trusts in Canada! 🌿

It was established to support the protection and care of lands across Mi’gma’gi, and to help advance a broader Wabanaki network of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs), along with other conservation work.

Today, this work supports all nine Mi’gmaq communities in New Brunswick, helping ensure that lands in our territory can continue to be protected and cared for in a way that reflects who we are.

More to come as we share more about our work!
