This past Saturday, we at Oceanic Impact were honoured to be invited to participate at Science Rendezvous at the University of Guelph-Humber. Our team of 7 hosted 3 learning stations and educated hundreds of individuals on topics including whales, ocean sound and noise, Canadian marine species, sustainability fisheries, ocean art, and many other activities.

Huge thank you to staff and students and for organizing this amazing event!

The event emphasized the need to be adaptive and agile, and we are incredibly proud of the team for quickly being able to adjust the format of one of our modules to adapt to that of a lecture hall, set up a new station to help drive traffic, adjusted the level of difficulty of our games based on our audience, coming up with unique prizes...

We look forward to continuing to be leaders in ocean education in the area and ramping up our planning for Ocean Week Toronto (June 1-8) of !

Did you know today is Endangered Species Day?

This day was first launched in 2006 by the Endangered Species Coalition to raise awareness for endangered species and to honour and acknowledge the Endangered Species Act.

Animals and plants can become endangered for a variety of different reasons. However, the primary reason for a species becoming endangered is due to direct or indirect human influences, such as overfishing, habitat destruction, or pollution.

You can help endangered species by reporting their sightings on citizen science apps, such as iNaturalist, and learning more about at-risk species in your area and how you can help them.

Celebrate the day by going to a zoo or aquarium, volunteering for conservation groups, or letting someone else know about the day!

Happy World Migratory Bird Day!

This day, originally known as International Migratory Bird Day, was first created in 1993, as an effort to increase awareness of and celebrate migratory birds!ย

Migratory birds increase their chances of survival by moving to places with more abundant resources during different seasons. Such as flying south during the winter to avoid the cold, and to find more food. Different birds have different routes they take while migrating! A smaller bird may need a route with more places to stop and rest, and birds with specific food sources will need to take routes containing something they can eat.ย

There are many different kinds of migratory birds, and there's almost a guarantee some will be going through your area! If you want to know what kind of birds are near you, you can use things like Merlin Bird ID, a free app, to identify birds! Do research on migration routes in your area, and make sure you spend some time outside to see the beautiful migrating birds! But always remember to keep a respectful distance so as to not disturb them!

Happy Earth Day! ๐ŸŒŽ
โ€‹
Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, where over 20 million people went out to celebrate the Earth and raise awareness of environmental issues caused by pollution, industrialization, and environmental degradation.

With each Earth Day, more people are inspired to help address environmental issue and you can help too!

Carpooling, turning off lights when not in use, recycling, and picking up litter are all very small actions that can count towards addressing bigger issues!

We hope you take this day to celebrate what the Earth offers and we hope to sea you at our cleanup tonight!
