Day one at SuperTrain!

We made it yesterday through a ton of ugly weather, but we're here!

Oh, the update? The building has been named.
There's also a bonus update.

Check out the before and after pics.

Getting ready to attend the Calgary SUPERTRAIN Show!!!!

It's been a productive stretch. This is the stage where all the little techniques — layering, surfacing, weathering — stop looking like work… and start looking real.

Huge credit to the crew who put the time into this one.

We were going to officially unveil the name on that second building…

…but somewhere along the way, we got a little too focused on the work and completely forgot what we were going to call it.

We’ll sort that out at the SUPERTRAIN Show, Saturday 25 & 26!

Until then — what do you think it should be? 👇

Spring is sprung.

Time to add some micro detail.
A little green goes a long way… and a good time to start the barbed wire.

Weeds were added sparingly; self-adhesive tufts, pressed in where they’d naturally show up.
Not everywhere. Just enough to break things up.

Barbed wire goes on after the fence is in.
Posts were left long for this step; then wire added across the tops to finish it off.

Materials used:
Vallejo tufts and small moss
Fine turf / soil blends
Wire rack + tule (fence base)
Flat grey spray paint
Barbed wire - 25G wire, 2 strands, twisted

Small stuff… but it adds up fast.

This is where it starts to come together.

The base is built using a simple glue slurry, white glue, water, and a drop of soap to lock everything in without disturbing the layout.

Ground cover is layered, not placed:
Fine turf, coarse turf, and soil blends mixed together and applied dry to wet glue, then set with a light mist.

The lot is AK Terrains Asphalt, worked in stages, built up, then knocked back with greys and dusting to break it up. No straight coverage.

It's coming along nicely.

This is where it starts to take shape. The lot went down in layers.

AK Terrains Asphalt base — uneven on purpose.
Then dry brushed and dusted to break it up. Asphalt never stays perfect.

Blended pavement into the surrounding ground using layered materials — applied dry, then locked in with diluted white glue and a light mist:
-Fine Turf (multiple tones)
-Coarse Turf
-Woodland Scenics Fine & Coarse Gravel
-Soil blends

Everything mixed… not placed.

Built the transition:
-Concrete → asphalt → broken edge → dirt → ballast

No clean lines. No hard borders. Just wear over time.

Even the tire marks were built slowly; suggested, not painted.

Materials used:
Woodland Scenics Fine Turf / Coarse Turf / Soil
Woodland Scenics Gravel (fine & coarse)
Bachmann Scenescapes ground cover
White glue (diluted)
Water + misting bottle
AK Terrains Asphalt
Acrylic paints (black/grey tones)

From mockup… to something permanent.

Foundations went in first.
Measured, cut, and set to match the final footprint.

Then the lot.

Base coat down, built up in layers, and worked until it felt right.
Not too clean. Not too perfect.

Materials:
Foam board + styrene for the foundations
Acrylics and washes for the asphalt

Simple materials.
Just time and patience.

This is where the fun starts......

It's all coming together.

Nothing permanent; yet.
Just moving pieces around… seeing what works.

Spacing. Flow. Sightlines.

Even the Amazon box made the cut—turns out it’s the exact size of what’s going there.

Rough? Yep.
But now you can start to see it.

We're well on our way......

Before anything new goes in… the old has to come out.

This wasn’t a light cleanup.
Angle grinder, wire wheel… right down to the base.

Not pretty work.
But necessary.

Because what comes next only works if this part is done right.

Out with the old… back to the workbench. It's time for a makeover.

Shows come and go.
The hobby doesn’t.

This is where we picked things back up.
Not finished. Just getting started.

Be sure to check back often.
We’re just getting started.
