Last Friday, a group of us headed "Out of Office" for a little team building and a LOT of fun! Rugby Ontario let us crash one of their Out of Office T1 rugby try-it days at Markham Museum. We learned a few basic rules, practiced some basic skills, and showed off our very basic talent afterwards. It is safe to say that none of us missed our calling as potential rugby stars, but we certainly got our steps in, laughed like we were at a comedy festival, and all left wanting to play again. Our staff feel informed and respected; our homes are free of pests; and we have gained a true partner. Last week, the Design Club at Participation House Markham was at it again! This time, they were creating keepsake boxes. These boxes will give them, or their loved ones (if they chose to use them as gifts), a place to keep all those treasured items we hold onto that are special to us and remind us of important times and people in our lives. A huge thanks to the incredible day program team at Participation House Markham and our wonderful volunteers, Maham and Madiha.

Arrgh! It's a pirate's life for me! Some of our residents went down to the Harbourfront in Toronto for a day on the salty seas (okay, the fresh(?) waters of Lake Ontario). Our community outings give our residents a chance to participate in their communities, experience new things, and meet new people. We are always looking to get our residents out and about, so all activity ideas are welcome! Please leave any ideas in the comments below.

Fancy a spot of tea? Last week, some of our day program participants got dolled up and enjoyed a cup, some treats, and of course, some wonderful company. In a group home setting, these opportunities are so important to bring the little things that we all take for granted in to ensure residents can socialize and experience different cultures and traditions.

It may be summer, but the Knitting Club at Participation House Markham is already preparing for the colder months ahead. Last week, they made the headbands and purses pictured here. The Knitting Club is one of the many new clubs that were launched at PH Markham this past Spring that are giving our residents a chance to express themselves through various art forms, discover new talents, and build stronger bonds with their clubmates.

The next session of our Empower Day Program starts Tuesday, September 8th. While the program is largely government-funded, we do have some unfunded capacity for additional participants to join us. The Empower Day Program runs from 9:45 am to 2 pm Monday to Friday and engages participants to get physically and socially active and participate in activities like cooking/baking, music, arts and crafts, literacy, community outings and much more. Located adjacent to Markham Stouffville Hospital in Markham, we are conveniently located near the 407. Participants requiring transportation can also access our transportation service to get to and from the program.
