Curious about why you might want to include native plants in your garden? Want to attract more birds and butterflies to your backyard? Birds and butterflies have co-evolved to live, eat and reproduce on native plants and trees.

The biodiversity crisis is urgent, but part of the solution is in our own backyard. Douglas Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home and Nature’s Best Hope provides inspiration and practical advice.

Wild Ones is partnering again with the Less Lawn More Life Challenge, a free 12-week program helping people turn everyday spaces into real habitat.

Each week offers one practical, expert-led action. It’s designed to be simple, approachable, and grounded in what actually works across different regions. Week one includes a talk by Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass.

New for 2026: Calamint and Golden Grounsel

Nursery grown native plants at affordable prices that you won’t find at your local garden centre. Proceeds support local nonprofits. Link in bio or visit www.climateactionlondon.ca/plantsale.

Looking for something to replace periwinkle? Plant several Golden Grounsel close together, and they will out-compete any periwinkle trying to re-establish. Over time, they will self-seed to create a mass planting. Pairs well with Virginia Bluebells and Wood Asters and is even semi-evergreen.

Calamint provides reliable nectar for native bees, butterflies, and hoverflies (insects whose larvae feed on aphids and other garden pests). The leaves have a minty fragrance and though it spreads by stolons and seed, this low-growing native is well-mannered and won’t overrun your garden which makes it perfect for borders, ground covers, rocky edges, and pollinator patches. And because it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, it’s especially suited to dry, challenging areas that might frustrate fussier species.
