The Government of Alberta is dismantling years of investment in consensus-based advisory organizations that shaped environmental policy on water & air quality, land stewardship & watershed management. In the past 6 months, they've cancelled the Clean Air Strategic Alliance & the Alberta Water Council, they've also terminated the long-standing watershed resiliency grant program, & dissolved the Land Stewardship Centre, which facilitated grants and provided ecological resources for landowners. The Government of Alberta is dismantling the network of consensus-based advisory organizations that shape environmental policy on water and air quality, land stewardship and watershed management. It took years of effort and good faith to build relationships and trust, but in the past 6 months the multisteakholder Alberta Water Council and Clean Air Strategic Alliance have been shut down, the watershed resiliency grant program was terminated, and the Land Stewardship Centre was dissolved. Spring floods keep prairie forests healthy! Spring floods recharge river valleys and give cottonwood seedlings a chance to sprout. The Oldman River through Lethbridge is flowing at 670 cubic meters per second right now (equivalent to 3.5 m). Hopefully the riverbanks can stay wet until the cottonwoods release their seeds in the next few weeks. Their fate depends on what the Oldman River Dam releases downstream... stay tuned!
