Rescue looks like hope, like second chances, like wagging tails and new beginnings, but it also looks like heartbreak.

The world sees the happy endings, but what they don’t see are the sleepless nights, the messages we can’t answer, the faces we can’t forget.

Saying no never gets easier.

Sometimes it’s because there’s no more room, sometimes because the funds are gone, sometimes because the medical or behavioral needs are more than we can take on. Whatever the reason, the word ‘no’ doesn’t mean we didn’t care, it means our hands were tied, our hearts shattered, and we carry that weight quietly.

Rescue is about saving lives, yes, but it’s also about living with the grief of the ones we couldn’t.

No one ever truly prepares you for the side of rescue that lingers in the silence after a dog leaves. The empty crate, the neatly folded blanket, the food dish pushed aside, it all becomes a reminder that a soul who once needed you is no longer there. People see the happy endings, the photos of wagging tails and smiling families, but they don’t see the quiet moments when you catch yourself listening for paws that will never patter across your floor again.

There’s a strange kind of guilt that comes with this work, the guilt of aching for them after they’re gone, as though your sadness somehow diminishes the joy of their new life. But the truth is, rescue is made of both. It’s the heartbreak of letting go intertwined with the indescribable relief of knowing they are finally safe, finally loved. Every goodbye leaves a weight in your chest, a reminder that love and loss walk hand in hand in this journey.

And yet, we do it again and again, not because it doesn’t hurt, but because the hurt is proof that it mattered. Each crack in our hearts is a testament to the lives we’ve touched, the futures we’ve rewritten, and the dogs who carry a piece of us with them wherever they go.

Courtesy Post for a fellow rescue:

Meet Callie: 2 years old, 50 lbs of gorgeous mixed breed brilliance (suspected Kelpie cross), and equipped with a nose so good you’ll wonder if she’s secretly part bloodhound.

Callie’s story starts in Chapala, Mexico, where she was found living on the streets. Ever the optimist, she made friends with the neighborhood, strolling into an open gate whenever she pleased until she finally charmed her way into the home of a kind rescuer.

Why you’ll love her:
🐾 Scent skills, ideal for scent work, shed hunting, or tracking down that TV remote you just had
🐾 Friendly, affectionate, and whip smart, she’s as sweet as she is sharp
🐾 Medium energy and adventurous, ready for hikes, games, or just a sniff filled stroll

Callie’s fully vetted, healthy, and ready to trade her street survivor badge for a “world’s best dog” title. All she needs is a family who will keep her brain busy, her nose working, and her heart full.

Callie is located in British Columbia, Canada 🇨🇦

Please reach out to myself or Just Four Paws Rescue Society for more information.

We'd love to see her find somewhere she can put her nose to use.

They don’t know this is only a stop along the way.
To them, our arms are home, our voices are safe.

But deep in their hearts, they’re still searching for a soul they’ve never met, someone who will see them, choose them, and never let them go.

Until that day comes, we will love them like they are already theirs...

Please keep in mind we have 3 dogs searching for a forever 🏡

Spike is officially over being poked, prodded, and examined and honestly, who can blame him?

After everything he’s been through the past 24 hours, he’s earned some serious rest. But the good news is, we’re already seeing signs of improvement. His nose is wetter, he’s eating, he's regaining balance, and he’s settling in for some well-deserved comfort.

He’s not out of the woods yet, but he’s headed in the right direction wrapped up in warmth, supported by care, and surrounded by love.

Thank you to everyone who’s helped us get this far. Spike may be tired, but he’s fighting and we’re right there with him.

A huge thank you to the Animal Emergency Clinic of the Fraser Valley and Dr. Amandeep Bhandal of Comfort and Care Animal Hospital for fitting him in!

At today’s vet visit, we learned that one of his ear infections has worsened, so he’s now on a stronger round of antibiotics. He’ll also be receiving subcutaneous fluids twice a day to support his hydration and overall strength. His diet has been adjusted as well to better support his recovery.

He’ll return for a follow-up appointment in a few days so we can monitor his progress and make any necessary changes.

Right now, his medical costs have reached $649.88. This total includes both emergency care and ongoing treatment, and it will continue to grow as we work to stabilize his health.

If you’re able to help, donations can be sent by e-transfer to [email protected], if that doesn't work please try [email protected] for e-transfer or paypal

If donating isn’t possible, please consider sharing his story. It truly makes a difference.

Spike’s health took an unexpected turn, and we’ve had to put his adoption on hold. He was rushed for emergency care, leaving us with a $351.78 emergency bill and his journey isn't over yet.

In just 1 hour, he’ll be heading to his regular vet for further diagnostics to help us understand what’s going on and how best to help him.

Right now, the suspected cause of his symptoms is a complication with his ears:
While one ear has improved, the other seems to have worsened, potentially causing the weakness and discomfort we’re seeing. He needs more care to get ahead of it.

This isn’t the update we hoped for but Spike still has so much love to give, and we’re doing everything we can to get him back on track.
