Our 2024 Annual Member Survey is open until January 13! Your feedback will shape the CYPT’s work for the upcoming year and beyond.

The survey takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete. We value hearing from as many people as possible, regardless of how long you've been with the CYPT. You can skip any questions or stop at any point. The responses and quotes will be kept anonymous. We will report the results in a manner that makes it impossible to identify individual responses.

Today is the last day of the 12 Days of Data. Data is a lot more than numbers – it is also people’s thoughts and experiences.

We’re grateful for each and every young person in who responded to the 2023 Youth Impact Survey. Without you, this data wouldn’t exist. Because of you, we’re able to share this data with decision makers to transform and improve our communities. This is how data turns into action!

It’s the second last day of the 12 Days of Data. Today, we’re sharing some insights from our Measurement4Change Task Group’s Public Facing Dashboard on Community and Program Belonging.

Sense of belonging comparison across surveys:
- Measurement4Change Belonging Survey: 86%
- 2021 Youth Impact Survey: 64%
- 2023 Youth Impact Survey: 71%

According to Measurement4Change’s survey, 86% of respondents feel a strong sense of belonging to their local community. 22% of respondents have experienced discrimination or unfair treatment in the community because of their gender identity, cultural background, physical appearance, or other personal characteristics.

On Day 10 of the 12 Days of Data, we’re focusing on the 2023 Youth Impact Survey Racial Identity Snapshot.

Overall, 72% of respondents said they had good or excellent access to health services like the doctor or dentist in the community. Breaking this down, we see up to a 24 percentage point difference.
- White: 80%
- South Asian: 74%
- Middle Eastern: 71%
- Black: 61%
- East Asian: 59%
- Southeast Asian: 58%
- Latinx: 56%

71% of all YIS respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community — a 7 percentage point increase from 2021.

It’s day 9 in the 12 Days of Data! Today’s data snippets are pulled from the 2023 Youth Impact Survey Long-Term Physical or Mental Condition Snapshot.

Collectively, 21% of YIS respondents said they felt isolated from others in the community. Breaking this down, we see a 22 percentage point difference between YIS respondents who have a long-term physical or mental condition compared to those who don’t.
- Long-Term Condition: 38%
- No Long-Term Condition 16%

71% of all YIS respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community. Sense of belonging was 17 percentage points lower for those who have a long-term physical or mental condition.
- Long-Term Condition: 57%
- No Long-Term Condition 74%

For day 8 of the 12 Days of Data, we’re showcasing tidbits from the 2023 Youth Impact Survey data, we’re focusing on the Experiences of Homelessness Snapshot.

38% of youth said they had felt so sad or hopeless for two weeks in a row or more that they stopped doing some of their usual activities. Youth with experiences of homelessness were almost twice as likely to agree with this statement:
- Homeless experiences: 62%
- No homeless experiences: 34%

71% of all YIS respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community. Sense of belonging was 18 percentage points lower for those who have had experiences of homelessness, whether visible or hidden.
- Homeless experiences: 55%
- No homeless experiences: 73%

Today’s data from the 2023 Youth Impact Survey is from the Sexual Orientation Snapshot.

All together, 48% of young people said they had experienced at least one form of discrimination. Breaking this down, we see a 22 percentage point difference between respondents who said they had a diverse sexual orientation and those who identified as being straight.
- Diverse sexual orientation: 67%
- Straight: 45%

71% of all YIS respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community. There is a 20 percentage point difference between respondents who identify as straight and those with a diverse sexual orientation.
- Diverse sexual orientation: 52%
- Straight: 72%

It’s day 6 in the 12 Days of Data! The Youth Impact Survey asked young people across about their life and well-being. This snapshot breaks down responses even further according to gender identity.

Out of all respondents, 33% said they felt anxious more than once a week in the last 6 months. But we can see that when we break this down, there is a 52 percentage point difference between gender-diverse and boy respondents and a 25 percentage point difference between boys and girls.
- Gender-diverse: 67%
- Boy: 15%
- Girl: 40%

71% of all YIS respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community. Sense of belonging was 31 percentage points lower for those with a gender-diverse identity than for boys.
- Gender-diverse: 47%
- Boy: 78%
- Girl: 70%

Day 5 of the 12 Days of Data is all about the 2023 Youth Impact Survey Immigrant Snapshot!

Out of all the YIS respondents, 51% said that they are a valued member of the community. This breaks down to:
- 53% of immigrant youth
- 48% of Canadian-born youth

71% of all YIS respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community. Between 2021 and 2023, we see that belonging went up from 67% to 73% for immigrant youth.
- Immigrant: 73%
- Canadian-born: 70%

For day 4 of the 12 Days of Data, we’re sharing snippets from the 2023 Youth Impact Survey Age Snapshot!

While the majority of respondents across Waterloo Region (76%) described their physical health as positive, there were differences across each age group.
- Ages 9-12: 86%
- Ages 13-15: 77%
- Ages 16-18: 65%

Overall, 71% of Youth Impact Survey respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community. Between 2021 and 2023, we see that belonging held mostly steady for youth aged 9-12 and 13-15, but it increased 13% for 16-18 year olds.
- Ages 9-12: 82%
- Ages 13-15: 68%
- Ages 16-18: 64%

It’s day 3 in the 12 Days of Data! The Youth Impact Survey asked young people surveyed in all cities and townships about their life and well-being. The Geography Snapshot gives a more detailed look by breaking down responses by area.

Across all municipalities, 55% of YIS respondents described their mental health as more positive. However, it varied 10 percentage points between Cambridge and Kitchener.
- Cambridge: 48%
- Waterloo: 54%
- Townships: 56%
- Kitchener: 58%

71% of all YIS respondents said they felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to the community. Geographically, we see a 10 percentage point difference between Kitchener and the Townships.
- Cambridge: 69%
- Kitchener: 74%
- Waterloo: 67%
- Townships: 64%

Day 2 of the 12 Days of Data is all about feeling valued, heard, and included.

According to the 2023 Youth Impact Survey Data:
- 92% of young people had someone in their life that is important to them
- 90% had people in their life who make them feel safe
- 85% felt there were people in their life who can help them when they need it
- 76% agreed that people notice the things they are good at
- 76% said that when they speak, someone in their family listens to them
- 69% felt like they were part of a group of people who are like them
- 51% felt like they are a valued member of the community
- 64% felt they could talk to their family about their problems
