An update from your Cottam Soccer Association Board:
We want to take a minute to clear up what has happened so far regarding Monday nights at Ridgeview Park so everyone is aware all of the steps that have been taken to ensure your kids are safe and able to enjoy the game they love, and you are safe watching them.
On May 11, during our game, a men’s softball game started. We knew there was some use of diamonds scheduled during soccer though we were unaware of when this would be occurring. Board members discussed with both team captains of these teams who were incredibly understanding of the way things were scheduled as well as the Town of Kingsville and the game was moved to another field.
We reached out to the Town of Kingsville who promptly scheduled a meeting with us to discuss our concerns. They realized there was a glitch in how fields were reserved which meant that this diamond in particular was booked in error, which should not occur.
To satisfy this and keep our players safe, the Town of Kingsville reached out the convenor of the Leamington Men’s Church Softball League, and asked that for the remaining Mondays in soccer season (last game June 20), these baseball games be relocated to a different diamond. The convenor assured all parties an email was sent to all teams informing them of this.
The following Monday, May 25, again the baseball league began setting up on Diamond 2. The board notified the teams that the schedule had changed, and while some players/spectators were upset ultimately the game was moved without incident.
This week, before the baseball team was set up, we again notified the teams of the switch and that their convenor was aware. The situation escalated quickly and we were met with a lot of hostility, parents and kids were threatened, many rude comments were made & overheard by kids & families and the situation became very tense and frustrating.
We did call the Town of Kingsville who sent a supervisor out very quickly. At this time the game was moved. Next steps and follow up from the town was outlined to the board and they will be following up with the league convenor yet again this week. We have been assured that representatives from the Town will be on site next week should any issues arise.
That being said, PLEASE talk to your kids especially younger ones who may be at the park while older kids are playing. Let them know to steer clear of these games and stay far away from diamonds that are used. Be aware when walking to and from games- we really hope this is the last of the issues from this scheduling conflict however we have thought this before.
Please know that we are working behind the scenes and advocating for your kids and that we were well supported by the Town of Kingsville. We are happy to pass on any information about the conduct or concerns related to this incident to the Town & the baseball league.
Thank you for your understanding & we hope any kids who heard the awful things said are doing okay. We are so grateful for our wonderful Cottam Soccer community!
